Im currently looking for a 144 hz monitor. Preferably 27 inch but obviously doesnt fit my budget (below $300). Therefore I have to go with the 24 inches (not bad either). I'm currently deciding between 3 monitors all in stock on amazon.
Amazon.com: BenQ XL Series XL2411Z 24-Inch LED Monitor: Computers & Accessories

Amazon.com: Philips 242G5DJEB 144hz, 1ms Extreme Performance 24-Inch Professional Gaming Monitor: Computers & Accessories

Amazon.com: AOC G2460PQU 144hz, 1ms Ultimate Performance 24-Inch Professional Gaming Monitor: Computers & Accessories

It's hard to decide which one since i have no experience in these monitors.

Your output will always be 60hz, regardless of the refresh rate of a monitor. Majority of the times, the higher refresh rates, causes what is called "Screen Door effect", "Soap Opera" effect, and for some people, they have actually had severe Migraines. The suggested settings are to turn off all fancy features on the monitor/HDTV, or in the Control panel for your GPU when you calibrate it.

If you really want to know what people are using and want to see the rating. Check through the websites that are dedicated to gaming to look at their ratings. Along with Consumer Reports.

Just remember that your weakest link will always be your GPU & other Computer hardware. The really sad thing is that computer gaming is an ever evolving market. What may be best now. May be worse six months down the road.

Gaming for computers has always been one of those things, that unless you have a whole lot of money. You are never going to get close to the exact same high end hardware or setups that they are using for testing the game products on.
