How can I find out why my HD are constantly whirring?

  1. #21

That's what i thought so I have run 3 different programs including extended tests and all say disks are fine? I have file history running, have all my important files on dropbox and do monthly backup to an external HD so I'm covered if it blows up.

I opened up a massive excel book that i usually run on a server and drove the Hard faults up to 900 and memory usage to 3GB without any noise so that all off the SSD

I imagine any HD noise is the 2TB photo drive. If i select all 50,000 images and hit save i can hear the drive writing, but the kind of normal noise you hear when the disk is active . As soon as its finished silence

The only other drive is the 500GB user data drive, but cant see how to stress that as no file bigger than 300Mb.

I don't think you can solve it without a technician opening the box. So the question is how much is that likely to cost vs another system etc..

Intermittent problems are the hardest to track down.

Edit: You can get hit by the old "it never makes the noise while the technician is checking it" syndrome.
