Scanner works under Win7 but not Win8

A twain-based USB scanner Plustek OpticPro 1248U works well under Win7. Yet I cannot install the drivers under Win8.

The drivers are not signed, so I rebooted the computer with requirement for driver signature disabled. When running the installer of the software, there is no prompt on whether to install driver or not, it just does not get installed.

When installing the driver from the context menu of the .inf file, there is a prompt whether I want to install an unsigned driver, I agree, but nothing happens.

The drivers are 32-bit, the system is 64-bit. Any suggestions?

I would get the 64 bit drivers for that scanner.

There are no other drivers.

Was your Windows 7 system 32 bit?

I could not find that model on the Plustek.

You will need 64 bit drivers to use the scanner on a 64 bit system.

No, it was 64-bit also.

I don't think twain is even supported in 8/8.1, it is pretty old. A bit like expecting DOS to work. You could try running a XP or 7 VM but no guarantees there either.

EDIT: Are you assigning Administrator privileges to the install?

right click the setup.exe file and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

In some cases a folder needs to be created in a system folder and needs admin rights to create it.

I run it as administrator anyway.

are you trying to use a specific program that comes with this driver or are you just trying to acquire via photoshop or other photo programs.

Windows basic drivers may be enough.

If not see if installing generic twain drivers will do the job..

The software that somes with this scanner is twofold: the driver itself + the twain stuff. Installing the driver itself is not enough: the scanner will be visible in the Device Manager but not usable. One needs to install the Twain stuff as well. The installer normally installs the both. The driver itself can be installed from the inf file.

Under Win 8 the installer exits without error or question, but the scanner does not appear in the Device Manager (other than as Unknown scanner). Installing from inf prompts a dialog where it asks whether to install the unsigned driver (if it is allowed), but no effect as a result, even if to agree.
