Fan spins fast when computer sits idle

Hi I'm posting this to see if anyone else is experiencing this and if it's a Windows 8 issue.

While using Windows 8 I've noticed that if I leave the computer on and not do anything on it the fan will start up and spin really fast. As soon as I move the mouse and start using the the computer it calms down again.

It has to be the optimisation service or how that is it called, maintenance.

Look right in the taskbar and see if there is a small clock on the action center icon next time it happens.
It happened to me too and it seems to use much of the cpu, that's why the fan goes crazy.

Sometimes .NET optimisations also occur in the background when pc is idle, so if you've scanned for viruses/trojans and you are clean then there is nothing to worry about.

lol there was a dude on sevenforums with this huge thread that kept complaining of the HDD light on the machine lighting up briefly when he was off the machine, as if there was this huge problem that he was losing sleep over. I kept trying to explain to him there are no issues and all that...it started actually turning into this really funny thread. He had some ODD thing about it.

Ya, computers do things when you're not around. It's all good. Believe me, if there is a problem at all with the machine, you are 100s of times more likely to notice it when using it then when not.

Maybe your AV program does a system scan during idle time - e.g. Norton does that.

I have a similar problem. Since I have installed Windows 8 last week I have noticed that when my computer turns off the screen after being idle for 10 minutes, the fan starts working very loudly. Then I move the mouse so that the screen lights up again and the fan becomes really quiet. You can't really explain it by my antivirus or something doing scanning because this always happens only when the screen shuts down.
I have tried changing settings so that the screen turns off after different times of computer being idle and still the fan always becomes loud only when the screen turns off. This did not happen on my computer on Windows 7 and I had exactly the same antivirus.

Hi DimonP, welcome to the forums, you don't need any third party antivirus in Windows 8, just uninstall your antivirus program and see whether it fixes the problem.

Hey brummyfan, thanks for the reply. I don't quite agree with you that I don't need an antivirus in Windows 8. I guess you are saying this because there is a new version of Windows Defender with antivirus in Windows 8, but after reading reviews and rankings on the web apparently it's not that good and gives you just basic protection.
I think my problem is more to do with drivers, but HP isn't producing new drivers for computers sold before 1st October 2011... Although in my computer everything works great on Windows 8 except for that annoying small thing when fan becomes loud when the screen turns off... Just thought maybe someone else has a similar problem.

Hi DimonP, third party security programs create a lot of problems for many users, once you are up and running without any problems you are welcome to install any programs, at the moment Windows Defender is more than enough to cover your security.

    ....... same problem here.
Fresh install with all the latest drivers.
As soon the display turns off automatically the fan starts spinning fast and noisy even though all programs are closed.
How to get to the grounds of it or better how to fix it ?
Any suggestions are very much appreciated .......

I had the same issue, and it was caused by logitech setpoint. Other than downgrading Setpoint, there is no fix yet
