Unknown USB Device - A request for the USB device descript

I have an external Bluray/DVD drive (ODP1201=S3-B) that works perfectly on Windows 7 but is not recognised by my new laptop which has Windows 8.1 64 bit. Can anybody explain why this is and what I do to get pass it, or is this a problem with Windows 8.1?

The device is listed in Win 7 as "hp bd rom bc 5501h", and the driver is 6.1.7601.17514

I have now tried various USB devices; I have connected a USB 2.0 External Hard Drive and a USB 2.0 Canon Camera both of which work OK, I have also connected a Seagate 1T external drive which is USB 3.0 an that was OK as well (the ports are all USB 3.0 on the laptop hence the reference to the which USB type)

The error message is as follows: "USB Device Not Recognised", When I go in to Device Manager I find two USB error listings, Unknown USB Devise (Device Descriptor Request failed) & Unknown USB Devise (Port Reset Failed)

I have been advised that this error can arise when a drive doesn't receive enough power from the system. The device does have two USB connectors, I have tried using both of them. The power cable going to the powered USB on the laptop and the data going to the adjacent USB (there are a pair of USB sockets on either side of the laptop, the right hand side having the only powered socket).

I'm too of opinion that it's a power issue. Laptops are not known to have much power thru USB ports, not even some desktops for that matter. Possible solutions: If that laptop has USB3 port you can try it in there, it gives more power and is compatible with USB2. Another one is to ad external power to the drive. One of the USB connectors on the twin cable has only two connection tabs and is for extra power to device. That one can be connected to universal USB charger for phones etc. That's how I solved a problem with a HDD in external enclosure.

thanks for that suggestion, hadn't thought of an external supply. However it doesn't change the problem.
I connected the bluray device to a mains USB power supply and then connected the data cable to the laptop. It came back with the same response.

To my mind it seems to be more about drivers than power, I hasten to add that I am open to any possible causes though.

I did a search on the Win 7 laptop, on which the reader works, for any reference to the driver "6.1.7601.17514" and found a huge list of driver entries. When I do the same on Win 8.1 I don't find any.

Has this any connection with another comment I found that Microsoft has removed the ability from Win 8 itself to play Bluray?

Unless you have Windows 8/8.1 with media center you need a third party player to play DVD/BD etc. but that shouldn't stop drive from being recognized and readable thru windows explorer or in device manager. Can you try getting appropriate driver fro drive's MFG ? even if it's for Win7.

Yes I tried going back to the manufacturer and they said that there isn't a driver for it as it is included in Windows, as indeed it is for up to Win 7.

Do you know of a way to get the driver out of a win 7 installation to copy the over to Win 8.1?

Hi CountMike, I have tried Major Geeks and when I run it on the Win7 laptop it comes up with the driver and it is called CD-ROM Drive and 6.1.7601.17514.
However when I run Double Driver on the Win 8.1 it does not show any CD-ROM Drive entry (I did try a restore of the Win7 CD-ROM driver on the Win8.1 laptop but it failed) Now the laptop is built without a CD-ROM drive in it, hence my desire for getting this external one working, so could it be that the Win8.1 build put on at manufacture didn't include it because there was no device in the laptop?
Do you have a PC running 8.1 that does have a optical drive in it?
