Hama Webcam won't work

hi all, maybe someone came across this issue.

I have a cheap Hama webcam (Messenger Set II it's called, I think). There is only one official driver for this thing, which is supposed to work on all Windows up to 7. Indeed, on my Windows 7 it works just fine. Now, I have recently installed Windows 8 CP on another hard drive on my system. it recognized most of my hardware, except for the Hama webcam - no matter how I tried to install the driver it won't work.

One problem is that Hama does not simply supply a driver - they give a small application that installs the drivers. I am not sure why, but this application fails on Windows 8 (I ran it with all possible choices for compatibility).

On Windows 7 I can go into the device manager and find the list of files related to the driver, but I am reluctant to use those, since I am not sure which files are actually necessary.

Any help will be appreciated.

See which drivers it uses and copy them to a new folder. Then in device manager, right click on it. Properties. Details tab. Change Property dropdown box to say Inf name. Look at the .inf name then go to your Windows 7 \Windows\Inf folder. Copy the .inf file from here to the folder you made, too.

Reboot to 8. Right click on the camera needing driver. Choose Update driver software, browse my computer, let me pick, have disk, browse.

Now double click on the .inf file you copied, click next, click ok and it will install.

do a Forum search for my upload of Amicap.zip and extract the exe files --doesn't need any drivers and it works on nearly all usb web cams (including built in one's that are normally usb anyway although you don't see the usb connection).

I posted this not too long ago -- might be on W7 Forums.

The camera needs a driver installed so Windows can use it in any fashion. Otherwise, Windows won't even know it exists.

PLEASE TRY STUFF before saying it won't work -- have you never heard of "PORTABLE APPS" before. All this one needs is for the USB drivers (standard system USB drivers) to be working properly which they usually are.

anyway here's the link. Attachment is in post nr 3 AMCAP.ZIP. just extract and run. (forget about the thread title about Logitech webcam).

If it doesn't work on your system then OK - but this has worked for me probably on MORE systems than you've had hot dinners.

I'll repeat it again so you can understand, since the first time didn't seem to do the trick: The camera needs a driver installed so Windows can use it in any fashion. Otherwise, Windows won't even know it exists.

No software can access a hardware device that shows unwell in the device manager.

I'll repeat it again as there's "None so Blind as those who refuse to see".

A PORTABLE application has all the necessary stuff built in so it "one time self installs" on each invocation -- installing "temporary" drivers as well.

That's the WHOLE POINT of a "Portable APP". No install or uninstall needed -- nor any registry permissions. (A lot of I.T people don't like these as they can't control what software is then used on a particular machine either) but in general Portable Apps are very convenient and can be run from things like USB sticks etc.

I suggest you at least TRY the stuff before pontificating over what can't possibly work when it OBVIOUSLY DOES on several systems.

You need to relearn how computers and Windows work instead of telling me how they do instead and telling me what I need to do, repeatedly and incorrectly.

Why do you types of guys always do this to yourself?

Now please stop interfering so the OP can actually fix his problem as I have shown.

Let us just imagine for a moment that the world is upside down and your app works as you say (it doesn't) - but don't you think there are other uses for a webcam than capturing video to a local disk? Don't you think things need to be fixed the right way instead of some poor suggestion?

Have you actually TRIED this application -- and you might *think* you know how computers work but PLEASE LOOK UP AND TRY SOME PORTABLE APPS.

Until you've tried this your remarks should just be totally IGNORED.

We all make mistakes but PLEASE TRY stuff first before saying "It Can't possibly work".

I don't know how old you are but you sound a bit like a "know it all Sub teen" whose picked up something from Google and is happily quoting it like Gospel without actually TESTING the stuff.

Here's a capture with this application (run from a USB stick). No camera etc exists in the device manager either.

Maybe three times the charm for you? If there is not a driver installed for the camera, then it can not work as hardware on the system.

You do know that webcams are mostly used to send video over the web, right? Just checking because it doesn't seem like it.

I think it's quite obvious from my posts that if I really did have an I.T. department, it would be a highly stable and well running environment. Have you too overlooked how I've fixed every bsod problem I handled, most of them with 1 post? Last time I checked, Google won't tell you how to do that.

I dislike things like this because its guys like you that always make idiots of themselves (capture program instead of camera driver - really???) and then I get dragged into it somehow, when it was never wanted. It's a poor suggestion and I hope you can realize that without all the nonsense.

Welcome and thank you for your contribution. The camera will not work unless the original poster installs the driver, so surely nobody is using it to spy on him or her. The way I showed how to install the driver would be the easiest under Windows 8 where the installer is giving him or her a problem.

I'll see if I can install it on an acessible server then you can download again.

This little app has worked on EVERY laptop I've ever tried it on -- with the .exe file run from the USB.
