After doing the tutorial below, you could then completely disable the Touch Keyboard itself by repeating step 4 for the TabTip.exe file.

Touch Keyboard Toolbar - Enable or Disable in Windows 8
I may be wrong but when you run a sfc /scannow and encounter unrepairable corruptions, using DISM /Cleanup-Image to fix will replace the orig TabTip,exe and TipBand.dll so the touch keyboardre-appears on every re-satart. I just disable the toolbar as a matter of practice rather than run a scannow and find that this may be the only thing wrong with the scan.

    Hello MrGeek,

Yes, that's correct. If you run SFC, you'll need to rename the file again since SFC will restore it.

I do thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, even the "simplified" instructions you gave me are way outside of my skill set.

Not to blame you - who tried to help - but I think this SUCKS. Why should we have to be computer programmers to stop a f-ing keyboard from popping up? What kind of weirdo geeks thought this up in some R&D session - "I know! Let's have an online keyboard pop up every time the user tries to type something. How cool would that be? Surely the user would rather use a touch screen keyboard rather then the actual one ATTACHED TO THEIR COMPUTER (And while we're at it, let's have a charm bar appear every time the user strays too close to the edge of the screen. HA HA HA HA HA!!!)"

    Lisalu,

Just to verify what you have done, did you:

    1. Add "Take Ownership" to the context menu?

Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8

    2. Right click on the TabTip.exe file, click on "Take Ownership", and then rename the TabTip.exe file to TabTip.exe.bak?

    3. Right click on the TipBand.dll file, click on "Take Ownership", and then rename the TipBand.dll file to TipBand.dll.bak?

Okay, by TabTip.exe do you mean TabTip? (It doesn't have .exe after it) Is that the one I rename?

Oh... and even better! I right clicked on TipBand.dll and clicked "rename" and then the whole file disappeared from the list. (and no, I did not hit "delete"!) So now I can't even find it.

I wasn't kidding when I said this is out of my league....

Yes, TapTip and TabTip.exe is the same file. You just don't have Windows set to show know file extensions.

It sure sounds like you clicked on "Delete" by mistake.

Double check your Recycle Bin to see if it may be in it by chance. If not, then you may have renamed it to something, and the file got automatically sorted alphabetically again.

No, really I didn't! I clicked "rename" and then the box to type in the new name came up. Then when I went to type in it - POOF - it all disappeared. Besides, if you click "delete" it always asked if you are sure yes or no....it definitely didn't do that.

Actually, you might be right, I might have hit a key which "renamed" it and now it is somewhere else.

I just have to say this ... I HATE my new Lenovo computer and I HATE Windows 8. I have had nothing but frustration ever since I bought it.

OKAY! I have tried to rename TabTip and it won't let me ... it says I need permission from "trustedinstaller"

OMG. I am so over this. I hate this computer hate it hate it hate it

Don't fret. Once you get used to it all, you'll start enjoying it.

Try right clicking on the TapTip file, and clicking on Take Ownership again. Afterwards, see if you are able to rename it.

"Take Ownership" doesn't show up any more. Yes, I did the whole thing to download the Take Ownership what-have-you, and I did it. Now its no longer there.

...now I did the "Take Ownership" download (the one I did before). Downloaded it again. Told it "yes" to run it. But TAKE OWNERSHIP DOES NOT SHOW UP ON THESE FILES!!!

I am so frustrated. I am seriously ready to throw a $900 computer out the damned window.
