Hello everyone, I'm new on this Eight forum.
Recently I got a new ASUS laptop X550D with Windows 8.1 installed on it.
I want to make a partition for another OS (Linux Mint) when I check it by disk management, there are 5 partition (or 2?)
Because I knew there is a limitation for primary partition. can anyone explain to me about this and what should I do next to make a new partition?

partition:
1. 100 MB system reserved
2. 900 MB (recovery partition)
3. 20.01 GB (recovery partition)
4. 186.30 GB (drive C primary partition)
5. 258 GB (drive D primary partition)

why are there 2 recovery partitions? and does Windows 8.1 has put a recovery on it? (especially the 20 GB)

Thank you for your help!

one is the recovery tools partition (WinRE)
the other is the factory recovery Images partition..

Thus the correct setup for OEM's

There are actually 6 partitions (the Microsoft Reserved Partition) is not seen by the system..

Your system is using GPT partition structure - allowing up to 128 partitions on the disk..

The normal MBR partition structure only allows 4 partitions..

the create another partition you would need to shrink another partition, and format the new partition space..

Depending on your partition layout - you may knockout the windows recovery option..

From a Command prompt(admin)
type> diskpart
type> select disk 0
type>list partition
type>exit
type> reagentc /info

post a pic of the command windows

Confused? Isn't that the first "System Reserved Partition" he listed?

Also, I don't see an EFI partition, legacy BIOS install?

Partition 3 is the MSR Reserved partition..
Partition 1 is the EFI partition

disk management vs diskpart

although partition 1 and 2 are usually in a swapped manner -

Maybe the reason is, recovery tools partition also has its own separate boot files..

Bios looks for the first bootable partition - in his case system partition - then the recovery tools partition..

most winre partitions are not bootable on there own and thus bypassed or overlooked by the bios - which finds the second partition as bootable

Ok, now I'm even more confussed. On my systems,
Clean install to Legacy BIOS shows first partition as System Reserved, then the Windows partition and there are no separate recovery partitions.
Clean install to UEFI shows first partition as Recovery and EFI next, then the Windows partition. For me EFI is always clearly labeled as EFI.
My original factory install (UEFI) had another factory recovery partition added, end of the drive I think.
Anyway, you clearly know a lot more about this than I do and I'm likely just confusing things for the OP so I'll just site back and watch from here on.

you will not see the MSR reserved 128MB partition in Disk Management

But you will in diskpart..

he has a 6th partition a D:\Data

Mine has Recovery 1 and System 2
His has System 1 and Recovery 2

my recovery is 305mb and does not contain any boot files
his recovery is 900mb which leads me to believe it may also have a bootable oem recovery environment

OK, I see that 128 MB partition on my laptop that has a UEFI install. No such partition on my desktop with a legacy BIOS install though? On my laptop its 300 MB Recovery then 100 MB EFI, then the hidden 128 MB, then the rest is the Windows partition.

No such partitions on legacy - all are shared..

Your laptop is the default setup

I also create the OEM recovery image partition 5 - as I do not run setup for windows > I deploy and apply windows images
