Moving existing install to SSD

I currently run 8.1 on a conventional 500GB HDD and will be moving this install over to a 500GB SSD. Do I need to do any prep work on the SSD prior to migrating the install? Windows 7 required sector alignment if I remember correctly.

You might consider using Macrium Reflect to "clone" the HDD to the SSD. When the target is an SSD, MR knows what to do regarding alignment and does it for you.

Like Mark said...if though the SSD is Samsung EVO or PRO it comes with Migration software(plus they are one of the best out there).

I do plan on buying a Samsung Evo. Is there a huge difference between the Pro and Evo?

When the migration software is finished you just have to swap out the SATA adapter from the old to the new leaving the old one unplugged at first. Then test if the SSD boots. When that works plug the old one in the second SATA plug and "destroy" all partitions leaving unallocated space-then partition the old disk how you want(I have mine in 2 partitions DATA with the libraries and Backups for Windows 8' File History and my Macrium Reflect's System Image backups. Then Format the partitions.

Think I'll just go with the EVO :)

If you plan to "destroy" the installation on the HDD, make sure you migrate ALL partitions to the SSD - including the recovery partitions. Else you have no options for refresh or tools.
