    DVI-D not working

I have an ASROCK Z77 Extreme 4 mobo with onboard DVI=D HDMI & VGA

Only the VGA port works . Because nothing happens when I use the DVI-D port.

The SATA 3 hdd came out of old system which had a DH61WW mobo, 8.1

It really does not matter where the Hard drive came from. What matters is if you just pulled it out of one machine, placed into another, the correct drivers for the new motherboard still need to be installed.

I updated from the ASROCK drivers cd and maybe there's an adjustment in BIOS that someone knows about.

Are you using a DVI to VGA adapter ?

Sorry, but besides the driver issues, it sure sounds like an illegal use of the Windows license too. If the Windows installed on that SATA drive was preinstalled and came with your old computer, then it cannot legally be transferred to this new computer. I recommend you either buy a new Windows license, or install one of the many free and capable versions of Linux.

Or just install W10 and be done with it for many months.

I'm not using a DVI-D to VGA adapter. The mobo has three display connections. DVI--D, HDMI & DGA.
The DH61WW was also a custom build. Windows 8.1 was not preinstalled. I paid for a blank 1 TB SATA 3 hard drive & Windows 8 OEM. Then I upgrade to windows 8.1
I know that it is technically & legally preinstalled but, pirating 8.1 is not my intention.
Actually, my Windows 10 disk was in the DVD tray the very first time I turned my new computer on. I had every intention of writing over Windows 8.1 until I ran into the problem of nothing on my monitor.
I already installed Windows 10 build 9926 on my laptop because I can't stand Windows 7.
I'm not smart enough for Ubuntu so of Linux is anything like that; I will always be happy with Microsoft Windows.
I will install Windows 10 I get my DVI-D working to my monitor.

Sorry, but that is NOT a legal use of the license. I was not completely clear in my previous post. It does not have to be pre-installed (that is just most common). In your case, this OEM license was purchased for, and installed on, and therefore LICENSED FOR the "O"riginal "E"quipment. And for licensing purposes, that means the original "motherboard" not the hard drive. It is not legal to transfer an OEM license to a new computer (or upgraded motherboard).

Don't sell yourself short. There is a learning curve, but Linux is not that hard to learn. That said, I much prefer Windows too.

So anyway, maybe you need to look at W10 again.

I've been trying to install 10 but have a slight problem "Can't install Windows on this disk. The disk is in the GPT partition style.".

I'm not trying to beat MS out of any money. But I'm not in a position to make a donation either. I've paid for several Retail copies of 98 SE and several copies of Retail XP before I found out about OEMs. I've paid for a few 7 OEMs and 8 OEMs also.
I'm not cheap but I have every intention of running the FREE WINDOWS 10 on this computer. I was just hoping to get all my hardware working with 8.1 drivers during the first few days.

In the meantime I'm googling for the GPT solution so that I can get help installing the legal copy of Windows 10.

I fully believe that! Please don't misunderstand. It is just that so many misunderstand the terms of these licenses and forget or don't realized they agreed to abide by them when they continued to use Windows the first time they booted to it - making it legally binding. It certainly is not likely Microsoft will come after you (unless you start using it on dozens of computers) - but they could.

I've not yet played much with W10 to offer any real advice but will be building a new system for it soon.
