I've had a downhill battle with my build since I built it in early 2014. My hard drive randomly goes undetected in Windows and due to this, sometimes my machine crashes as expected if none of the crucial system files are accessible. When the machine crashes, most of the time the drive is also undetected in the BIOS until I completely turn my machine off and back on. What happens when the drive goes undetected in Windows is the same thing that would happen if you were to completely unplug the drive, you can still move the mouse and what not, but whenever something needs to access the disk, everything starts to freeze and if it doesn't come back within 30-40 seconds, the machine will just BSOD.
The only more temporary solution I've found is to enable hot swap for the drive in my BIOS however this isn't a real solution if you ask me. Interestingly enough, this issue has NEVER occurred while gaming.
Just for reference, the error I see in event logs when freezing occurs it the following:
Warning 2/21/2015 9:14:49 PM storahci 129 None
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.
I've replaced the following parts costing upwards of $300:
My previous motherboard was an MSI 970a-G46 which does share the same chipset as the one I replaced it with.
Here are some of the many troubleshooting steps I've tried(apart from replacing hardware). I believe I've narrowed it down to not being an issue within Windows as mentioned above when my system BSOD's, the drive isn't detected at boot, but I could be wrong, so input is appreciated.
Current hardware:
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0
CPU: AMD FX 6300
RAM: 2x4(8 GB) G.Skill Ripjaws(1600 MHz)
PSU: Cooler Master GM 650
GPU: AMD Radeon 6870
HDD: 2x1 TB WD Black

- tested my RAM using memtest86(passed)
- removed all other drives/devices
- switched OS's from Windows 7 to 8.1
- tested using multiple SATA ports on both motherboard
