Hi All,
I got a strange one this afternoon when I turned on my computer.
Instead of booting to windows, it tells me
“One of your drives needs to be checked for consistency”
It started to run a program, I guess it was chkdsk, but I am not sure about that. I then went to answer my phone, so I don’t know what happened after that. When I came back, windows was up and running. I can see nothing wrong with windows.
Anyone know what is this all about?
Thanks
Sven

Apparently Windows found an issue with one of your drives and ran chkdsk to fix the problem. Are you dual booting Windows 7 and 8 by any chance?

If me, I would manually run Error checking (or chkdsk /r from the command prompt) again - just to make sure.

How was the computer shutdown before you turned it on this time? An improper shutdown can result in corrupt data and cause this error. And I would want to known what caused an improper shutdown. Power outage? Failing power supply? Dirty interior/heat problem? Failing RAM? Malware?

One time occurrence or first of many to come?

If you properly shut it down through the Start menu options, and all else seems fine and you got this error, a failing hard drive is definitely something to keep watch for.

In ANY event, this is still a BIG RED FLAG reminding you to back up any data you don't want to lose - NOW!

Hi Itaregit,
my computer was shut down properly. I opened up the side panel, and there was almost no dust in it. the night before I was running
Malwarebytes and it found 3 files, but gave me the option to ignore, but I quarantined them anyways. after that I ran sfc scannow and it found a few file that could not be repaired.
I just ran Crystaldiskinfo, and both drives come back normal. as for backing up, I have several Ghost images as well as new backups of my Libraries. I will not loose anything.
Today it booted up just fine.
I guess I keep an eye on it.
Thanks for your input

Sven

After doing a search for .chk, I found several chk files:
3 x edb.chk
1 x file0000.chk
1 x softokm3.chk
1 x mssdbm3.chk
1 x freebl3.chk
1 x dir0000.chk
5 files .pmg with chk in the file name

Do I have to do something with them?
Thanks
Sven

Don't HAVE to do anything to them but CAN delete them. Delete them to the bin only and reboot, if nothing complains than you can empty the bin, if there is problem you can restore offending one fro the bin.
file0000.chk and dir0000.chk I'm sure of, can be deleted permanently.
