Removeable drives still listed when there's none attached

just recently I've noticed that there are a number of removable drives shown as connected in Windows Explorer - even though there are no drives connected.
As I attach a drive a new drive is added, but when I remove the drive it still shows in the list in WE.

Anyone any ideas how to correct this??

    TIA

Do you have a flash card reader on the system if so the drives you are seeing are the empty slots from the card reader.

Check Folder Options/View and see if Hide empty drives in the computer folder is checked or not

    Not as simple as that.
It seems there is a deeper problem

Now I notice that when I connect a USB Hard drive (as opposed to a flash drive) and it appears in disk management - but without a drive letter.

I never had these problems before although - I've had win8 since it first came out.

Something has changed recently and I don't know what.

Try this software Drive Tools for Windows to clean up drives that do not exist

First make sure you remove all USB devices except KB/Mouse

    Thanks for the link.

    Nope not normal at all.

1- Are you sure you are not creating mount points?
2- Are you removing USB storage and Flash drives by using the windows "Eject Mass Storage Device"?

Mount points - not sure I fully understand these, but there have been occasions when I connected a USB drive where Windows did not register it, although it was visible in Disk Management without a drive letter, and I had to assign a drive letter to be able to access it.
This happened on numerous occasions because of a faulty drive.

I normally use the 'eject' procedure - but sometimes may have removed a USB storage device in hast and forgotten.

Is it safe to remove the drives in DriveCleanup?

It should be fine, but like with all things make a back up of your system first.
