Computer hangs on power down

Hi all,

I've been having this issue for a good few months now. As far as I remember it came on suddenly, not gradually, though there may have been a small period during which it sometimes powered down correctly and sometimes did not - I can't remember.

When going into shutdown, sleep, or hibernate my system appears to get to the final hurdle, but then hang. My monitor is even powered off as it believes the computer to be. I have to hold the power button to get it to turn off completely - I have left it for 5-10 minutes before and it's still been on.

How should I even go about looking to see what's causing it to hang? I've tried disconnecting my many HDDs and my GPU in case it's a hardware thing, but to no avail. Haven't fiddled with the RAM at all.

System specs:
'dows 8.1
Intel i5-3570K @ stock
AMD Radeon HD 7950 OC'd 950/1250
Asus P8Z77-V LX
2x4GB Corsair Vengeance
Corsair CX750M PSU
Samsung 840EVO
3x3.5" internal HDDs

I wasn't sure which section to post this in as I'm not entirely sure whether it's a software or hardware issue, if it's deemed to be in the wrong one then please do feel free to move it.

Thanks all.
