Attaching a DVD drive using an external drive carrier?

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

I have a second DVD recorder that's an IDE connection. The PC I just built doesn't have any IDE connectors and I don't want to mess with adding anything. I'd like to connect the DVD to use when needed (yes, I have SATA DVD burners in the box, but this one is a lightscribe unit)...

The external carrier has both SATA and IDE connections and connects with either USB2 or eSATA... It works FINE either way with hard drives. But, when I plug in the DVD, although it spins up and appears to be fine, Windows just says it's an unknown drive that's uninitialized...

Is there an easy way to change something so the system will recognize this DVD drive?

Are you sure it is getting enough power? DVD drives generally need more juice than hard drives.

Well, it spins the DVD, and it shows up on the system. But I have no idea how to tell if it has enough power.

Try setting "Cable select" on the DVD drive.

Cool idea. It didn't work but it was something I hadn't thought of...

I just checked and the power supply on the external is 2 amps at 12V and 2 amps at 5V... I figure a DVD should come up and work with that much juice...

Disk management is still aware of SOMETHING, but says it has to be initialized. It appears I'm getting some Device Descriptor Request failed error - code 43. And even though I've now read a bunch of topics in various places, I STILL have no idea what that means or what to do about it.

Is this external carrier designed to work with optical drives? If your repurposing one that was originally meant for hard drives it may be a firmware issue. It may not have the code in it to identify the drive.

Interesting... No, as far as I know, it's just a normal external carrier for a disk. I'll have to see if I can find something that shows a carrier for an external DVD... Not quite sure what that would look like...

I DO have a couple OLDER carriers from back in the 486 days, so mayhap I'll try one of those... They were 5.25" carriers for IDE drives so maybe one of them will work......

Thanks for the idea.

I haven't tried to do what your doing so I'm just guessing really. I have an HP Lightscribe drive in an external enclosure but it came that way from HP. I have no idea if it's IDE or SATA. I've never opened it up and looked inside. All my other enclosures are for hard drives. 2.5 inch mostly and one for 3.5 inch drives. Non of mine will hold an optical drive, not without disassembling them and only using the electronics part.

OK, got it....... I dragged out one of those old external carriers for 5.25" drives (the old 3.5 inch drives in the wide frames)... I DID have to set the drive to Cable Select, and then the system found it just fine.

So, all working happily now.
