Need to replace HDD. Advice appreciated

Just 14 months after purchase I ran a check on my laptop this morning and got a result that suggests the drive could fail imminently and should be replaced. No big surprise as I have had some issues, but out of warranty now (of course).

Fortunately I did 2 back-ups a couple of days ago, Macrium and Windows own, so have no worries about losing data (for once!).

I currently have a Toshiba M01ABD050 500gb HDD (actual 465gb). I am only using 100gb of this space, and do not really envisage using a much greater proportion. So I could replace with the same HDD.

But I have seen a good deal on a Seagate 1tb 2.5 inch SSHD and am wondering whether it would make sense to upgrade to this?

    What do you think?

Depends on the amount of SS storage and the price of course!
(I've yet to use a hybrid drive, so I'm just guessing)

Thanks for the reply Edwin. I thought there might be more contributions, but maybe SSHD is still untried for most people (or maybe I am being a bit impatient in wanting to get a solution before the drive actually dies).

I'm going to mark the thread as solved as I've made my decision (which is to replace with the same drive again. I did some more research and decided that I won't necessarily achieve much extra with the SSHD, and I can live with the speeds of an HDD, which have been pretty good anyway. It's always a good opportunity to make a coffee if something is taking a while to load ).

Maggi I realize you marked this thread solved but I have one option for you that I did with my Windows 7 laptop. I bought me a Samsung pro 256GB SSD and a 2TB external USB HDD. What I did is, shrink my windows C: partition down to 213.26GB, leaving enough room (10%) for overprovisioning for the SSD. After shrinking C: drive, I then made a system image of windows on to the external USB drive. Them I stuck my Recovery Disk(USB or DVD) in and turned the computer off. Then I removed the old HDD and put the SSD in. Then I booted to the recovery drive and found my system image and reimaged my SSD. after that you should be able to boot the SSD and installed Samsung Magician(DVD comes with SSD) and optimize the system for SSD use. Then you can use the External USB HDD for documents, data, media...etc. or even put your libraries there.

    • Make sure you have AHCI turned on in BIOS
    • If you get a Samsung, update Magician and the Firmware(makes a big speed difference)
    • Again if you get a Samsung use RAPID MODE

Thanks for the suggestion Cliff, something to consider (and remember for future use).

On this occasion I plan to start with a fresh install of Windows as I've been having odd issues and think that a clean slate is the way to go. I'll just use my System Image to get my data back. Also a good opportunity to finally get rid of the Dell bloatware that I keep meaning to uninstall but then forget to do.
