2 of 4 laptop USB 3.0 ports don’t work correctly

Heya,

I’ve got a problem with my laptop’s USB ports. All four are rated 3.0 and I’ve installed all drivers from the laptop’s support page (as of a month ago) and everything else from Windows Update.

Presently, two ports function fine, but the other two refuse to connect as 3.0, giving me a message saying “[d]evice can perform faster when connected to USB 3.0”. Additionally, they occasionally won’t recognize my USB 3.0 devices (which work perfectly well everywhere else) at all, though disconnecting and reconnecting usually solves this after a couple tries.

I think I’m running the latest drivers and all, but I’m not experienced enough with the Device Manager and such to really tell if I’m missing something. There are no error messages or unidentified devices there, at least.

The USB 3.0 devices I use are a SanDisk Ultra (64 GB) thumb drive and a Verbatim SNS1TB external HDD.

General specs:
Model: Asus G750JZ-DB73
OS: Windows 8.1 (x64)
CPU: Intel Core i7-4700HQ
RAM: 24 GB DDR3 dual-core
Storage: 256 GB SSD, 1 TB 7,200 RPM HDD

Thanks in advance for any help. Please note that replies may be infrequent since I have sporadic online access.

Are you sure they are all USB 3.0 ports? On my K75DE two are (Blue) USB 3.0 ports and two are (Black) USB 2.0 Ports.

Yep, all four USB ports are blue-colored. Additionally, online specs mention 4 USB 3.0 ports, two on each side.

Funny thing, though – last night I plugged in my USB 3.0 thumb drive in one of the faulty ports, and just today, I notice it reads “Connected to USB 3.0” when it never gave me that message yesterday.

Dumb inconsistent computers …

Try clean the usb ports by folding paper to adequate thickness and insert it into the port 2 or 3 times.
