    wireless Printer offline?

    Hello All

How do you shut off the software firewall and any thing else needed, to get a printers IP address?

I am working on getting my new HP lap top (with windows 8.1) to connect wireless to my HP 6988 printer that is 7 years old,

I followed the instructions that came with the printer to "configure the printer."

If the printer is plugged into the Xfinity router with an Ethernet cable the wireless laptop will start the printer.

When the Ethernet cable is removed the printer goes "offline" as seen in "view devices and printer" and will not print.

Reading the printer instructions a little further it reads "a software firewall can cause a lost connection." The instructions continue that the firewall should temporary be shut off before assigning the printer an IP address

You don't! You should never - as in NEVER EVER need to turn off your firewall for anything. Period. Be suspicious of anything that suggests that - even HP. It is very rare a firewall, especially with such a modern OS as W8, needs to be disabled to set up network printing.

You can get the printer's IP address two ways. (1) Use the printer's own control panel menu system to print a "Network Configuration Page". It should be listed un General Information, URL for embedded web server. (2) Visit your router's admin menu via your browser and look at the list of "Connected Devices" and it should be listed there.

    Hello Itaregid

Thank you for the reply with clear directions on what not to do.

I should have directly asked how to get the wireless printer to print. I wrongly chose to follow something I read in the printers instruction book.

What I have been able to accomlish:
I was able to get the printers IP address by plugging the printer in to the router with an Ethernet cable. I followed the instructions that came with the printer to 69"configure the printer."

If the printer is plugged into the Xfinity router with an Ethernet cable the wireless laptop will start the printer.

When the Ethernet cable is removed the printer goes "offline" as seen in "view devices and printer" and will not print.

What can I doo to get the HP 6988 printer to be wireless?

The IP assigned via Ethernet may not be the same assigned via wireless because of the way the router sees the device. Remember, technically, there is no such thing as a "wireless router". That is a marketing term only. The device is actually an integrated device that contains at least 3 discrete network appliances in the same case; the router, a 5-port Ethernet switch (4 in back, one internally) and the WAP (wireless access point) that connects to the router via that internal Ethernet port. Depending on how your router sees connected devices, it may assign a different IP when going through the WAP.

Also, I note your printer only has the older 802.11g wireless support. That may be an issue for your router if the other devices connect using current 11n protocols. Not all routers can support both 11g and 11n devices at the same time. You may do better sticking with an Ethernet connection to the printer.

I guess I should add the 7525 was (I think) a special model sold exclusively through Sams Clubs. And I bought it last year ago so it is likely HP has come out with a different model by now. Shop around and be sure to compare the costs of consumables (ink) too.

As long as the Gateway is set for Wireless-g/n, you will have no issues. In order for the printer to connect through wifi to the gateway, you have to tell the printer which SSID and the passphrase.

As for where you purchased it, it is a moot point and has nothing to do with your issue.

Sorry, but both statements are not necessarily true. You don't know what router or WAP device the OP is using. Not all allow for "simultaneous" g and n access. And with W8.1, you don't even need the SSID and passphrase to connect your network ready printer when setting up the printer through your computer.
