Solved wireless Printer offline?

Hello All

How do you shut off the software firewall and any thing else needed, to get a printers IP address?

I am working on getting my new HP lap top (with windows 8.1) to connect wireless to my HP 6988 printer that is 7 years old,

I followed the instructions that came with the printer to "configure the printer."

If the printer is plugged into the Xfinity router with an Ethernet cable the wireless laptop will start the printer.

When the Ethernet cable is removed the printer goes "offline" as seen in "view devices and printer" and will not print.

Reading the printer instructions a little further it reads "a software firewall can cause a lost connection." The instructions continue that the firewall should temporary be shut off before assigning the printer an IP address

You don't! You should never - as in NEVER EVER need to turn off your firewall for anything. Period. Be suspicious of anything that suggests that - even HP. It is very rare a firewall, especially with such a modern OS as W8, needs to be disabled to set up network printing.

You can get the printer's IP address two ways. (1) Use the printer's own control panel menu system to print a "Network Configuration Page". It should be listed un General Information, URL for embedded web server. (2) Visit your router's admin menu via your browser and look at the list of "Connected Devices" and it should be listed there.

Hello Itaregid

Thank you for the reply with clear directions on what not to do.

I should have directly asked how to get the wireless printer to print. I wrongly chose to follow something I read in the printers instruction book.

What I have been able to accomlish:
I was able to get the printers IP address by plugging the printer in to the router with an Ethernet cable. I followed the instructions that came with the printer to 69"configure the printer."

If the printer is plugged into the Xfinity router with an Ethernet cable the wireless laptop will start the printer.

When the Ethernet cable is removed the printer goes "offline" as seen in "view devices and printer" and will not print.

What can I doo to get the HP 6988 printer to be wireless?

The IP assigned via Ethernet may not be the same assigned via wireless because of the way the router sees the device. Remember, technically, there is no such thing as a "wireless router". That is a marketing term only. The device is actually an integrated device that contains at least 3 discrete network appliances in the same case; the router, a 5-port Ethernet switch (4 in back, one internally) and the WAP (wireless access point) that connects to the router via that internal Ethernet port. Depending on how your router sees connected devices, it may assign a different IP when going through the WAP.

Also, I note your printer only has the older 802.11g wireless support. That may be an issue for your router if the other devices connect using current 11n protocols. Not all routers can support both 11g and 11n devices at the same time. You may do better sticking with an Ethernet connection to the printer.

I guess I should add the 7525 was (I think) a special model sold exclusively through Sams Clubs. And I bought it last year ago so it is likely HP has come out with a different model by now. Shop around and be sure to compare the costs of consumables (ink) too.

As long as the Gateway is set for Wireless-g/n, you will have no issues. In order for the printer to connect through wifi to the gateway, you have to tell the printer which SSID and the passphrase.

As for where you purchased it, it is a moot point and has nothing to do with your issue.

Sorry, but both statements are not necessarily true. You don't know what router or WAP device the OP is using. Not all allow for "simultaneous" g and n access. And with W8.1, you don't even need the SSID and passphrase to connect your network ready printer when setting up the printer through your computer.

Hello Broe23 and Itaregid

Thank you for the replies.

If it is possible for me to find out g and n access can be used "simultaneous" How Would I do that? Would it require a call to Xfinity or could a check be made on my laptop?

Open up the Gateway admin page and go to Wireless. Dslreports.com has a good FAQ section on their Comcast forum for the gateways.

It all depends on the router - which we don't know yet.
No it does not matter the model of the gateway, Access Point or Wireless Router. They all work the same when connecting through wifi.

You need to look in your router manual. What is the make and model number?

Come on Dude! Do you really claim to know how EVERY router or WAP ever made works? Clearly you don't so PLEASE stop claiming they all work the same. They don't!

For example, if your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup, like my Netgear and MANY other wireless routers and WAPs do, you DO NOT enter the SSID or passphrase when connecting new devices.

I looked at the Gateway admin page. Getting to Wireless part left me wondering. To the left of the Gateway screen was list that I could pick with a click. Choosing "Gateway" "Connection" then WiFi. On the right side of the screen were several list. One of the list was Device Name, and MAC Name. There I saw the name or description I assigned to the printer (Family RM). Under the MAC Name was something that started "ec:0e. It did not look like a IP address.

Is there some thing on the gateway page that might explain why the printer is offline?

You do not assign anything in the gateway for the printer. You need to make sure that the gateway allows for Wireless-g/n wifi connection. On your printer, you would go into the settings and for Wireless in the printer menu, have it search for the SSID for your Gateway. Then enter the Passphrase that is used to wireless connect to your gateway in the wireless menu on your printer where you did the search for the SSID.

Once you connect to the SSID for your gateway, the printer will show online if you go to Devices & printers as a Network device. You will also show the old Ethernet connection, but as offline.

Personally if the printer sits close to the gateway, just leave it connected via Ethernet. It will be a faster connection between the gateway and printer.

This will help you better understand wifi basics. Wireless Printing Center | HP® Official Site

I only print documents in black, and hardly used my Officejet 4500 series, that I finally bought a Brother Laserjet. I think out of the three years I had the Officejet, I only printed once maybe every six months, just a couple sheets. The Brother HL-2280DW, also has a flatbed scanner, Wireless-b/g & Ethernet connections.

At 7 years old, your printer is at that point, that you may want to upgrade to a better one, or one that allows for iOS or Android OS direct printing, google print if you use Google Chrome on your laptop and take it with you. Those options will raise the price a little more. I paid $130 for the Brother with just the options it came with.

Hello broe23

Thank you for all the web sights with the information. The printer is working. I missed a change in the IP address.

I did an un install and a reinstall. (Settings, Control Panel, View devices).
At the end of the reinstall was a box that said the IP address could change.
Before closing the last install box I pushed the button on the printer that provides the list with IP address and the URL.
The printer's IP address did change.
That last install box said to type the new URL / IP address in to the browser's address bar.
I did type the URL / IP address into the browser's address bar.
I clicked on the wireless 802.11 to the left of the first page and I followed the instruction listed in the network tab.
At the end of this was a test printer page. I clicked for the test.
Their was the test page sitting on my printer.

I thought it was worth the effort to get the WiFi working as the lap top is used downstairs, and the router is upstairs.

Thank you again and thank you for keeping me motivated.
