Opening folders not maximized

I just purchased a Winbook 7 to play with it and see what it could do. It was on sale at Microcenter for $49 and how could I go wrong on that.

I'm amazed at what it can do. I even installed MS Word and Thunderbird on it which it ran (a little slow) with no problems despite only 1gb of ram!
I was so impressed that I bought a 32Gb sdcard to expand its capacity and it has ceased to be just a toy.

Question:
All the folders open maximized and even though I reduce them to the intermediate size before closing, they reopen maximized - which I don't want. I can't find the setting that lets me change that so folders open in the intermediate size between minimize and maximize.

Can someone help? The OS is Windows 8.1 with Bing which is said to be just like standard 8.1.

Thank you.

It might be a scaling and/or display resolution issue. Try using smaller scale font and see if it helps

I don't think so. Maybe I didn't explain myself well.

When I open a folder, it opens maximized. I can then click on the intermediate icon on the top right (between minimize and maximize) and the folder snaps down to about half the maximized size. Which is what I want. But, when I now close that smaller sized folder and reopen it, it opens maximized instead of the smaller size it had when I closed it.

How do I get it to open at the same size it had when I closed it?

That sounds like what I need. Thank you.

It's a new tablet, so I will first make a backup to an external device and create a usb rescue flash drive (which I should have already done anyway) in case something goes wrong if I edit the registry. Hmm, I wonder if 8.1 can do an image b/u or if I need to attach to my laptop and use its acronis to create a backup to the laptop. Will play with that first....

Thank you. I think this will do it. I appreciate the help.
