Finding the right Drivers for my Computer

Hello everyone

i switched to win 8.1 and i have no idea what drivers i should use, and wasted a lot of time searching for the right drivers, but didnt do very well

i looked on the fujitsu site with my serial number, it was found but said there are no drivers..
at some point i got desperate and installed a few driver finder tools like DriverEasy, all showed something else, and yeah i know that they are mostly useless.

it was no problem to find drivers for graphic card, sound card, network adapter and keyboard though.

i just let drivereasy download this drivers and use them now:
Intel Chipset INF drivers
Something for my Mouse
a driver for my screen
usb human interface device
usb mass storage device

it really bothers me not to know if thats the right drivers at all, but i stil use them
i would really appreciate if you could help me find the right drivers, or tell me what i should install at all and what not
and i'm sick of replies like "never change a running system"
i just want my pc to run without problems and slowdowns because of missing or wrong drivers
thanks in advance:)

I would do it like this: All drivers associated with MB (chipset, USB etc) from Fujitsu-Siamens. For GPU from AMD, for sound and network from Realtek. There are many programs that can tell you which exact models of each component you have.

Try searching by model instead of serial number. Most drivers that worked for Win7 should work fine for Win8.1, except some old graphics ones.

    Some wired stuff
so my computer originally came with windows vista on it
and i just searched by model too, it says there are no drivers for this model, but its good to know that win 7 drivers work for win 8.1 too. does that mean vista drivers should work for win7 fine too? cause i'm kinda thinking about going back to win7.. although that wouldnt solve the driver problem, but i feel like everything got more laggy and slow since win8.

and finally yea i get the gpu and sound drivers from amd and realtek, but like i said there is nothing on fujitsu.

the newest inf chipset driver didnt really do much and i guess wasnt compatible
i downloaded an older inf chipset driver with drivereasy (version 9.4.4.1006) and used it so update these drivers manually:

Intel(R) 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E (for this i had to use an even older inf driver)
Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset PCI Express Root Port - 29C1
Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset Processor to I/O Controller - 29C0
Intel(R) ICH7 Family LPC Interface Controller - 27B8
Intel(R) N10/ICH7 Family PCI Express Root Port - 27D0
Intel(R) N10/ICH7 Family PCI Express Root Port - 27D2
Intel(R) N10/ICH7 Family SMBus Controller - 27DA

Intel(R) ICH7 Family Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
Intel(R) N10/ICH7 Family Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C0
Intel(R) N10/ICH7 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8

they all sound pretty important to me haha
is it bad to just take any driver for those? or shouldnt i touch them at all?
because these are the main drivers that bother me and i dont want to screw it up

If everything working alright you don't really need newest drivers. It happens sometimes that older ones are even better.

I'm with CountMike, worry about what's not working versus looking for drivers for everything. Windows 8 comes with a lot of the standard drivers needed to get your PC running. Windows update will take care of some more. Once that's all done open up device manager and look for anything with a yellow ! or a red X. Unknown devices etc. Then try to hunt up drivers for those. After all that's done, if you still want to look for the latest and greatest go for it. It may take some hunting to get them though. I'd create a restore point before trying drivers your not sure about. Going to AMD for Video should be OK, sane deal with Realtek. As long as your sure about your hardware. I went that route on an old Acer laptop I put Windows 7 on, it came with Vista from the factory.

Yup CountMike and alphanumeric are on the money. Windows 8.1 is still relatively new so the have the latest generic drivers except for maybe cutting edge hardware. The "only" drivers one ever needs to update (and only if you are a gamer or 3D CAD user) are the graphics drivers and maybe(for example I use HDMI so my sound is controlled thru AMD graphics card) sound drivers. The only other drivers the computer manufacturer can give you are the special FN keys such as for a laptop screen brightness or volume...etc.

In addition to that, drivers themselves are not to be confused with complete package that they come in together with their controls and control panels. If you look in device manager for a driver for particular part, in it's Driver tab you can see real version of that driver which doesn't have to correspond to version number in downloaded driver. There are times when driver itself, ie. it's version does not change at all but it's controls do or some feature for setting the device change only. Some driver files you download do not contain anything new (drivers wise) for your particular piece of HW but only add drivers for a newer version of it. If that's the case, there's no point in updating drivers as they stay same for that (older) HW. Manufacturers make packages like that to save on their distribution and there's no guarantee you'll get newest ones. It could be seen in .INF files in the package.

A good example are the Realtek audio drivers(which get new filters from time to time): my desktop is hooked up with my HDTV thru HDMI instead of the analog jack, so the Realtek control panel doesn't even show up like it does on my laptop. So in my case updating such is a total waste of time and bandwidth being they'll never be used. HID drivers for keyboard and mouse, monitor, disk drivers haven't changed since 2006. Drivers should not be confused with firmware like in the case of Hdds and SSDs. The driver is the "translator" that tells the OS kernel and software how to communicate with the hardware, firmware is software to control a device. In general a driver is a kernel module that talks to hardware; firmware is software that runs on the hardware that talks to the driver. So a driver that's over 10 years old does not mean it's outdated. It also depends how these so called "Driver Updater Utillities" find their drivers: by date or by version number. By date is usually where a site puts the driver in it's catalogue, a version number can be a generic driver tuned a bit for a specific PC; like a LENOVO H530 and a LENOVO H530s.

Yes, thanks to P&P (Plug and Play), in the beginning we used to call it Plug and Pray as it was not as reliable as today.

On my desktop PC the only thing that doesn't work is my onboard VIA sound. It's not detected at all, not even as unknown hardware so Windows doesn't look for a driver for it. As far as its concerned, its not there. On my laptop the its just the touchpad gestures that don't work. It's a special utility for that. You can point and click you just can't two finger scroll etc.

On laptops one thing you can run into with stock windows drivers is reduced functionality. You may have sound but your keyboard sound up down function keys don't work. Or your WIFI's Airplane Mode on off doesn't work. You won't know until you try to use them. Also laptop manufacturers often customize the driver for their hardware. Switchable graphics for example. If its say Intel and NVidia, getting the driver from the laptop manufacturer is probably a better idea than installing two separate drivers. One from Intel and one from NVidia. I'm lucky on that one, my laptops switchable graphics are AMD/AMD. I can skip ASUS and go right to AMD for the latest driver.

I must say though, that Windows has come a long way as far as stock drivers go. It's nice when you do a clean install and your WIFI works right away. And you cordless keyboard and mouse work.

I know what you mean. For example my asus x54c needs ATKHOTKEY package for the FN and media keys to work. when I boot into ubuntu, I have to use the UI for Audacious or KODI(XBMC).
