Are there alternative shells?

So yeah, are there any alternative shells to use in Windows 8.1? I've got an HP Split X2, and when I take the screen off to use it as a tablet, everything is too small. Never liked the shell anyway. Is there any way to have Gnome or KDE in Windows?

There are alternate shells for Windows and some may be similar to Gnome or KDE. Whether or not they are compatible with Windows 8.1 is another matter. You can do a Google search for "Windows Alternate Shells" . I have no experience with these and have no interest in trying any.

A full image backup of the OS partition and a backup of all your data is HIGHLY recommended before proceeding. Of course you should have this anyway. Experimenting on a virtual machine would also be a good idea. Be aware that Windows applications generally assume the standard shell is in use and may behave in unpredictable ways if it is not. System instability is also a possibility. Do not expect support from Microsoft or the computer manufacturer.

I wouldn't use an alternate shell on any computer used for important purposes.
