External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

    Can someone please help?

The irony... we get an external drive to protect our data and not loose it and then this happens

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

    Hi,

Thanks for coming out to the rescue! I just downloaded the mentioned tool and as soon as I click on damaged or lost partition options, I get a Power Data Recovery not responding

There is some talk around the net on this subject, that states that the removal of the drivers (completely) and disconnecting the drive (do not switch off but remove the power lead from the drive), Leave a few minutes, re-connect the lead and let windows re-install the drivers. You may have already tried this but if not then it may be worth a try

As A last resort for self recovery ( there are of course professional recovery options, but the cost of these are prohibitive and only you could make the decision as to the value of the content verses the cost of recovery), I would remove the actual drive from the external caddy and try the drive connected directly to the system (thus removing the internal circuitry of the caddy and the cables. I have hot swap caddies internal to my systems and external sata/IDE caddies for this purpose so would not need to open the case, but this is possible with a normal desktop, (or some laptops), though you may opt to check a local independent repairer in your area if you feel this is beyond your experience.

the main issue with this type of recovery is that any time you try a recovery tool and this fails it can actually make things worse

Grrrrrr I thought I had posted my reply a few days ago and I see that I did't go through.

I have decided it is best to have a professional deal with my HDD. I do not have access to a desktop and It seems it has gone beyond the point where I personally can do something without the risk of loosing everything.

I have emailed a few places that were recommended to me and the cost ranges from 97 to 800 :-/

The only thing I can recommend, if possible look for a company that offers some form of "No Fix No Fee" service, or at least a flat fee

One other thing to ensure is that both parties agree on what "recovery" means, A fully working but empty drive could be classed as "recovered", but would not be of much use to you
