    new hard drive

on my last laptop i had a aspire 5550 and it put a bran new hard drive in it, after puting the back on and battery to gether i then pressed the power button on the laptop. nothing completly dead..
that was my first time doing that...

i now have a advent 1000 and it needs a new hard drive which is on the way to me.
seems easy to install just slide it into the pin holes and lock it, is there anything i need to do?
theres no power lead connected to the hard drive and im worried if putting this new hard drive in it i will get the same result as my last laptop.. so when i put it in and hit the power button should it start up straight away?
will my windows 8.1 still be there or do i have to reinstall it?
    many thanks
    david

Once you install a NEW hard drive you will need to boot your computer from your windows setup media and reinstall windows.. the new hard drive will be blank and usually will only show a flashing cursor if started

You can also transfer your current OS with an image.

So what I'm more concerned about is after hard drive is fitted and I turn power button on it will start up not like my last one just did nothing. Yes then I will f12 and boot cd to put my windows back on. Is that right ?

Nah, you have to boot the PC with your installation DVD and install the OS.

Depends on your laptop, if you mean that pressing F12 brings up a boot menu that allows you to choose to boot from the DVD drive then yes.

Can't explain why your old laptop was dead after you installed the hard drive. I have replaced lots of drives in laptops and desktops and never encountered that issue so I would say it's not a frequent occurance. It may be possible that you installed the drive incorrectly (not sure how that is possible) and caused a problem but it may have just been a coincidence that your laptop died at the same time.

Bruce, it looks like he plunked in a virgin HDD without an OS. No wonder the thing won't boot.
