Cloned my old HDD to a new SSHD but it will not boot.

    Hello All,

I cloned my 2 TB HDD (Disk 0) to my new 4 TB SSHD (Disk 1) using macrium reflect, all seems to have gone well except when I try to reboot using my new SSHD with the old HDD unpluged i can only access the BIOS (Maximus hero VII MOBO Bios). I have already switched the Boot Option settings to boot off the new SSHD. When i plug the old HDD back in and boot my pc it starts normally.

So i have a few questions, Why does Disk 0 still have (Boot,Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition) if i changed the Boot options on the bios and not Disk 1? Also when i right click on Disk 1 and try to "Mark Partition as Active" this option is grayed out, but on Disk 0 it is available.

I pretty much want to boot my PC off the new SSHD and have the HDD as backup storage.

I added a new entry as drive D: and set it on the "Edit boot menu" tab.

is that correct? Sorry tried looking at the guides but couldn't find anything.

    Thanks.

Well, looking at the D: drive in the pics you posted, if that is the SSD you're trying to make work, it is not formatted and there is no boot partition. A bit confused what drive is what. Have you simply placed the SSD into the HDD slot and see if it boots?

Drive C: is my old HDD 2 TB, I cloned all the info from Drive C: onto Drive D: which is the 4 TB SSHD (Not an SSD, cant afford that lol).

I thought i did format it since it is now blue and doesn't say no allocation or whatnot.

On Drive D: i noticed it does not say (Boot,Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition) but it does say that on drive C: . I guess my question is, how do i make Drive D: say (Boot,Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition) instead of Drive C:. I think that may solve the issue.

That should already be there if you cloned correctly, it doesn't appear anything is there. What did you use to clone and did you clone all partitions on the C: drive?

I am not sure if it will work. You are cloning a 2TB disk which has MBR style partition to a 4TB disk. For any HD > 2TB, you should configure as GPT disk style.

In addition, why would you want to have a 4TB disk for your Windows ? Normally, we want to keep Windows OS to be small (100~150GB) for easy maintenance and Backup and save your personal data to the large HD.

I used Macrium Reflect, and it seems that it cloned fine.

Added a new picture. Is there anything i can do on disk management to change this option?

    Hello Top gun,

Yes i thought of that too, When i first formatted the 4 TB SSHD i set it to GPT, but maybe when i cloned it changed? And i just figured if i could start my windows from a 4TB SSHD it would boot faster and programs would run faster, if this is false then it makes no sense to even mess with the settings. I will just use the 4TB SSHD as a storage drive.

    Thanks

If you want Windows to run/boot a lot faster then you should consider getting an SSD. 120GB SSD is more than enough for Windows then you'll see big improvement. For large HD, it will not help for Windows to boot/run faster.

The price of SSD is really dropping down, here's one:
