I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and of course my old scanner c. 1999 no longer works since it doesn't have a signed driver.
I got this old scanner working in Windows 8 by starting under Advanced Startup Item No 7 which disabled driver signature management and enabled me to use an old unsigned driver.
I tried the same method in Windows 8.1 but about 5 seconds after Windows 8 starts, the screen goes blank and I need to reboot the PC. Any ideas? Is there a way of disabling driver signature management in safe mode which may crack the problem?
Did you do it this way ?
permanently disable Driver Signature Enforcement
bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON
Thanks. I wasn't aware of that method. How do you reset the driver signature enforcement since I only want to disable it to install one driver?
I suspect the blank screen may be due to the AMD v14.9 drivers which many report as 'buggy' - I'll try v14.4.
My old scanner is an Epson Perfection 1200 from c. 1999. I found a Windows 7 signed driver for the Perfection 2400 and that works fine! I guess I'm better off using a signed driver which seems to work (albeit for the wrong scanner) rather than force installation of an unsigned driver?
Hmmm.... never tried to rest driver signatures as I change to test all kinds of HW often but suspect that using ENABLE and OFF in same lines should do it.
This is a longer way to disable How to Disable Driver Signature Verification on 64-Bit Windows 8.1 (So That You Can Install Unsigned Drivers) so turning ON should work same.
I also found AMD 14.9 drivers troublesome, there were at least two beta versions and both tried to resolve some obscure problem with some games and at same time screwed up something that gives me negative of some IPTV applications. 14.4 works just fine with my R7 260 OC although there's a slight problem with CCC in Win 10tp. There's some 14.10 drivers that MS is pushing thru updates but it's too basic and it doesn't work any better than 14.9. Try to avoid it.
The problem of the screen going blank when I restarted using the option to disable driver signature management disappeared when I reverted to AMD graphics drivers v14.4.

Didn't quite get it, did the problem with blank video go away after and because of drivers v14.4 or the problem with signing the drivers got solved by GPU driver ?
I've had a few problems with blank screens following restarts for disabling signature management and uninstalling software. No problems with blank screens using AMD drivers v14.4. Restart option 7 for disabling signed driver enforcement now works without getting a blank screen on restart.
