Fingerprint reader issues

Hello all,
I'm having issues with my fingerprint reader on my pavilion DM4. It shows up in Biometric Devices in Device Manager, and even shows that it is functioning, but in HP SimplePass and 8.1 Settings there is no option to enroll a finger as a password logon -- the option is greyed out (Settings) or absent altogether (SimplePass). How can I run a test on the reader itself to verify it's working?

Are you running 8 or 8.1?

I'm running 8.1, and I know how to do it natively. My point is that neither the native settings app nor Simplepass are recognizing the fingerprint reader, thus not giving me the option to register a fingerprint. However, the device manager lists the device as functioning properly, so it seems to be a hardware problem that device manager is not picking up or some other issue related to the device.
