Solved USB 3 Hub Won't Function in USB 3 Mode

I have my second install of Win 8 (8250) on my Asus p7p55d-e Pro. I'm running the default Win 8 USB 3 drivers. On my first install I eventually tried Renesas Win 7 drivers but they made the system go crash happy, hence the fresh install.

USB 3 runs fine (fast!) for my Corsair Flash Voyager stick and my Seagate Expansion 3TB drive. The problem occurs when I add a USB 3 hub. The hub shows up in device manager as, "Superspeed USB Hub (Non Functional)" It actually functions at USB 2 speeds. Device Manager claims it is working properly. I thought the hub was bad so I purchased another brand at Newegg only to get the same message. Plugging the Corsair USB 3 stick into my lighted hub gives me a red light, indicating low speed. A file transfer verifies this.

Since I have only two USB 3 ports and two USB 3 devices I can live without the hub. It would just be nice not to have to reach around the back of the PC each time I wish to use the USB stick.

Anyone else having hub failures or know a fix?

Thanks

Update: After a few reboots the hub is totally non-functional. When I look at the loaded drivers all I see is "USBHUB3.SYS".

Hi Regkaz,

It sounds like the USB 3.0 hub you have is using old firmware. Some early versions of 3.0 hub firmware didn't work well with Windows – dropped devices, intermittent failures, data corruption, etc. However, as a USB 2.0 hub, these hubs work just fine. So, if Windows 8 detects the old firmware, it will treat the USB 3.0 hub like a USB 2.0 hub.

You can get your USB 3.0 hub to work as a USB 3.0 hub by updating the firmware. If you look the notification area on the taskbar, you should see a flag icon for “Action Center.” If you click on the flag you should get a message similar to this:
action center.jpg

Click on the message and follow the instructions to update your firmware.

That's good to know! I'll be looking into getting a 3.0 hub sooner or later once the prices come down on various 3.0 flash drives and any external hard drive enclosure. The board here has a pair of presently unused 3.0 ports to take advantage of. :D

Welcome to the EightForums! by the way.

The fail was from two different manufacturers and their sites had no firmware updates. I pretty much gave up on the hub acting as USB 3. Thanks for the heads up - I'll check the action center tonight.

Nope. The Action Center has nothing. Both USB 3 hubs that I've tried continue to list as "Superspeed USB Hub (Non Functional)". They aren't even marked in any way as being a problem. No yellow warning or anything. Almost like Win 8 feels "non functional" devices are just fine. Any chance Win 8 wasn't ready for USB 3 hubs so it lists them as "non functional" to let you know they intend to add them later?

Gman - there is no driver. There are no alerts. The hub continues to function at USB 2 speeds and detect as "Superspeed" (as in USB 3) but also as "Non Functional".

Install the latest USB 3.0 driver from the motherboard or manufacturer's site.

Same for motherboard bios update. Good to do anyhow. Along with that, I'd even install the USB 3.0 firmware update too.

USBHUB3.SYS is a Windows 8 default driver needing to be changed to use nusb3xhc.sys and nusb3hub.sys instead.

Enjoy.

You shouldn't need any bios update to start with unless the board has a programming problem or a newer bios version offers support for something newer. As for hubs they should simply plug in and work automatically if the USB bus is functioning as it should.

Once you are at the Asus support page there you will need to select the correct flavor for 7 drivers. You won't find any drivers available for 8 this early unlike the 7 beta version drivers seen when MS had stressed wanting device drivers available for 7. Apparently they didn't get around to pushing for 8 drivers since none of the other companies as well as Asus show 8 beta anything! Creative Labs had 7 beta drivers available back in early 2009 available for testing 7 then.

Most 7 drivers should still work while usb hubs should simply be able to plug in and work if the ports are good.

Bios updates are always good.

Did you miss the part about nusb3xhc.sys and nusb3hub.sys?

Not actually! You can end up trashing the bios on a board if you end up seeing a bad flash! The original bios should be backed up first in case of any mishap.

The other reason would simply be put "why fix what isn't broke to begin with?". The usb download from the Asus support site uses an Asus setup utility to install those drivers for usb. The driver names are not displayed when opening up the zip file download itself.

Engineers do not create bios updates because they have time to spare and nothing better to do. USB 3.0 is a rather new technology, especially it has been at the time of the latest bios update that should be installed.

What does zip or names displayed or anything else have to do with the OP solving his issues how I showed him to do? I don't even think it's a zip, but rather an .exe to run.

This thread has been up for 4 weeks. You could have helped him all this time or commented on it all this time instead of waiting for me to show him how to fix it and then try to dispute it.

This thread was left unanswered until last week if you read the first page completely.

Besides a hub is a hub and not a device that has any mode. It's the device that you plug into the hub or port that is being seen a 2.0 not 3.0 device. For that you may have to plug it into the 3.0 port directly to see if the hub is the problem if not externally powered with an ac adapter.

I've run into that problem enough times with 2.0 flash drives, printer, keyboard where any hub that relied on power from a port wouldn't be enough to power anything plugged into it.

I think you need to leave solving issues to those that know what they're talking about.

The OP needs proprietary drivers installed as I've shown, instead of the Windows 8 default USB3HUB.SYS as he has shown.

To make it very easy for you to understand and so I don't have to respond to your unnecessary intervening, NEC created the USB 3.0 drivers for a reason. They didn't create them out of being bored or amusement.

Maybe now you can stop derailing the successful fixes shown.

Leveraging the USB 2.0 port instead of the USB 3.0 could also be a temporary solution that allows early Windows 8 adopters to get additional devices working under normal parameters.

“Some devices may not enumerate or function as expected when connected to a USB 3.0 port. Connecting these devices to a USB 2.0 port should resolve the issue until updated drivers are available,” Microsoft said.

Windows 8 USB 2.0 and 3.0 Device Issues - Softpedia

Since 8 offers native support the next step is actual troubleshooting general usb problems. One part of the Complete Guide to Troubleshooting USB Problems goes right into what i was saying before about under powered hubs where plugging a device directly into a port or replacing one hub for another that uses an ac adapter can solve a variety of issues.

Even if you never have a USB device that doesn't work at all, you might see one of the following messages when you plug a USB device into your computer or into an external hub:
"This device can perform faster"
USB_Faster.jpg

To solve this problem, we need to see how USB ports are configured in the system BIOS – and find out what type of USB hub is in use.

"Hub power exceeded"

USB_HubPowerExceeded-01.jpg

This problem, on the other hand, requires a trip to the Windows Device Manager.

So first, it wasn't enough for you to try to stop a nice bios update that should be installed.

Then, your misunderstanding of drivers made you intervene when it was unnecessary.

And now you would like to continue with an issue that is foreign to what we're dealing with here: power? Op never mentioned anything at all relating to what you just posted, so it is beyond my understanding why you did.

What I do understand is that the NEC drivers I listed need to be installed.

We might as well start posting about who we think is going to win the next World Series or Superbowl.

I think the Yankees have a fair chance this year. Maybe the Giants again too!

Maybe you also missed this part of the OP: "Update: After a few reboots the hub is totally non-functional. When I look at the loaded drivers all I see is "USBHUB3.SYS"."

That concludes my involvement in this thread until the OP reports back that everything is well or he needs my help installing the drivers/bios/firmware for 3.0.

Ahem. Can we get back to the original problem? I'm usually pretty good with computers. The BIOS is current. The USB 3 firmware on the board has been updated back and forth between what is on the Asus and the Renasis sites. I didn't know Renasis bought NEC so I've applied software for each (although not at the same time).

When my system was Windows 7 64 bit all of the available drivers would either bsod or stop detecting my Seagate 3 TB USB 3 drive. It was so bad I posted a very nasty letter on the Seagate forums blaming them for a bad drive. A clean install of Windows 8 64 bit with no additional drivers runs the drive great. Same for my Corsair USB 3 flash drive.

It is only the hubs (both of which are no-name brand Chinese units from Newegg for under $40 each) that properly detect as "superspeed", "This device is working properly", and "The best drivers are installed" yet with the phrase "Non Functional".

On my first install of Win 8 I tried the Win 7 drivers but the crashes returned. I'm hoping this is just an issue of something Microsoft will fix in an update or the final version. It would be nice to know I can buy a third USB 3 device since the board only has 2 ports and a hub will be a necessity.

I should add that the hub hasn't died since my clean install of Win 8 64 bit with no additional USB 3 drivers. It's only the issue of USB 3 devices plugged into it running at USB 2 speed.

Are those two hubs self powered or no ac adapter by chance? With 2.0 the current was 100miro amps allowing for 4 devices while 3.0 was raised or supposed to raised to 300ma in order to support upto 6 devices.

Often whether 2.0 or 3.0 with manufacturers still facing bugs due to 3.0 being new as well as problems seen with 2.0 devices and hubs after how many years now? are due to errors in manufacturing resulting in poor quality!

If you take those devices you plug into the 3.0 hub and plug them directly into one of the 3.0 ports and they fly then you know the hubs are ... crapola as simple as that. On the other hand if those devices like flash drives still run at 2.0 speed then they are being seen as 2.0 not 3.0 devices and this is where the main problem stems from.

You could liken this to taking a 2.0 flash drive currently sold like an HP for example and plug into an old 1.1.-2.0 board and guess what? The flash drive may barely work if even detected! The support for the newer or latest devices wouldn't be there to start with.

The change of brand for flash drive however as well as going rhrough several brands of hubs finally saw results with a CyberPower 4 port 2.0 with ac adapter being the most reliable for the 2.0 application. For 3.0 it wouldn't any different as far as paying for what you get in that sense. You may want to read up on this a little with a review on a Siig 3.0 4 port hub which goes into some of this. Review of Siig SuperSpeed USB 3.0 4-Port Hub

Another thing to look at is the Legacy speeds are still supported with 3.0 and where the confusion begins. One older article from 2009 does a good job explaining things however. 10 things you should know about USB 2.0 and 3.0 | TechRepublic
