I was simply looking some other things that can trip you up at times. When not able to find fault with drivers installed or with a particular hub or device plugged into it the next step is a look at why it works when plugged directly into a port but not while plugged into a hub. That couldn't be ruled out entirely.

Was there a new driver issue by chance? regkaz I got a notice of a reply but not found here.

    This fixed my issue

I do believe the issue is because the Hub is using older firmware. If Windows does not detect that it needs newer firmware find out what chipset it uses and go to their website and update to the latest firmware for the chipset.

My hub was using the VL810 chipset and I downloaded http://via-labs.com/en/downloads/fir...VL810_0960.zip

and upgraded the hub with this latest firmware and after that Windows 8 was able to use the hub as a USB3.0 hub.

That would be make a lot more sense as far as the firmware being too USB 2.0 likely seeing the same chipset in use on 2.0 hubs and now put into the new 3.0 products. They simply came up with an update rather then manufacture an updated chipset to save on costs.

They are 3.0 chipsets. According to Microsoft the early 3.0 hub firmware did not work very well as a 3.0 hub but great for 2.0. So windows 8 will only run those hubs at 2.0 speeds until it detects newer firmware.

Isn't it wonderful! Some years back the supposedly 2.0 devices faced similar issues at times when those always seemed to operate a bit slower then 2.0 likely being 1.1 orientated.

I still have to look now to see what CyberPower has for 3.0 hubs however. That has been a reliable brand of hub for the 4 port size with ac adapter. I can take anything usb 2.0 that is and plug it in and have no problems.

Now on the next machine to come along on the other hand some of the exact flash drives or other devices will suddenly run into problems with another brand especially hubs that run solely off of the port itself it is plugged into. Once I start collecting 3.0 devices I will at least have a good hub to work with.
