Solved Hard drive showing incorrect storage after RAID

Hello everyone, i know the title sounds amateur-ish, but hear me out. I have my windows installation on a different hard drive than the one i'm talking about.

a friend of mine had a computer with a RAID setup for the hard drives in it, but after one failed, he just replaced them both and i took the one that was still good and formatted it. I have since been using it as a backup hard drive for specific files.

It is a 500gb hard drive, but it only shows 338 free after a format, if i go into properties for it it says there are 146 MB used, but you can't even see a sliver on the pie chart. I was thinking that being put in a raid setup had changed the partition somewhat and had redered part of the drive useless. Should i do the Diskpart utility from cmd prompt? last time i used it on a flash drive that memtest had rendered useless i still couldn't format the flash drive and has since been useless to me, even though i followed all of the instructions that many others had said worked for theirs. I just don't wan to ruin this hard drive by trying to squeeze a (possible) 100 extra gigs out of it.

If anyone has any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.

Thanks a lot.

diskpart should work. From admin command prompt:

  1. dispart
  2. list disk
  3. select disk # where # is the disk number for 500GB Drive
  4. clean
  5. exit

Open disk management and point at the disk #, right click->Initialize

Okay, I cleaned the disk with diskpart, but i didn't see an initialize option in disk management. When opening disk management it asked me what type of disk it should be, and i picked GUID, (the other option being MBR), and then had to choose a new simple volume. It is attempting to format now, I'll update with any progress. (or lack thereof)

Thanks

That's what it is, sometimes Disk management does it automatically but GPT or MBR. GPT is a new partition style and usually use with HD > 2TB. In your case, use MBR then follow the next screen to create partition then format it. However, if you've already picked GPT then that's OK too.

Excellent, i cancelled the format, recleaned with diskpart, and selected MBR this time, did a quick format, and the drive seems ready for use, should i do a full length format? there was no data previously on the disk, so i'm not sure if it'd be best to do that first before storing backup files on it.

Quick format is fast, full format takes a long time. Normally I run: CrystalDiskInfo.V6.2.0
to make sure there's no bad sectors and the disk is healthy then I just do a quick format.

BTW, you can use diskpart on the USB stick, you might be able to salvage it also.

i had tried the diskpart utility on the USB stick, i also had to perform a couple other steps in the cmd prompt in order for it to let me even attempt to format it, it was only a 2g stick and when i was able to format it, it took over an hour, and at the very end, it said it was unable to format the disk, so I ended up trashing the thing, it was a freebie from enrolling in my local college. No big deal. the program you suggested said error c6, uncorrectable sector count 1. the thing has been booted up over 4000 times and has over 21,000 hours on it, so i imagine that isn't all that bad. Awesome program, thanks for the download link.

Thank you very much, you were very helpful in all of this.

OK, you are welcome.
Since the HD is not really in perfect shape, you might want to run: chkdsk /r :X where X is the drive letter from the command prompt so that Windows will avoid using the bad sectors.

when i right click on the start icon and go to run, i type in exactly:

chkdsk /r :1

and a command prompt box shows up for a split second, and disappears. I went to the drives properties and had it check for errors, but after running it said it found no errors. Did i type something wrong?

No, you need to open the command prompt first: Win+X, press A then type: chkdsk /r X: where X is the drive letter. It will take a while to complete since chkdsk will go thru every single spot on the drive and mark the bad sectors.
