Wanted to know if i did a BIOS update can it be easily reversed in case of a failure. Some say by re-flashing the old BIOS back in, some say you need to remove the battery inside case and put it back in while pushing the power button and some say way in BIOS to set it back to default BIOS.

I know it is not important to update a BIOS if there is no major changes to a new one or if you are experiencing hardware compatibility problems because it can brick the MB. I thought it may add some features i do not have for RAM and UEFI.

Although i did it about 4-5 months after purchasing this system and it worked fine. When i go back now and look at the manufacturer's site under my model number PC it lists all .CAP BIOS 's, except for one i have now and below that one on list are .ROM. My version BIOS is 4101

My system uses a .ROM BIOS and it is told to you on the site from list of the systems BIOS's , not to use .CAP if have a .ROM one.

What is weird when i go to the Motherboard on same site instead of the system model, version numbers of each BIOS do not correspond to the version numbers of the system model, but the MB BIOS's are all .ROM ones.

I posted both links plus when i purchased the PC it was with Windows 7 64bit Home Premium, i upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.
Why i am looking at the Windows 7 64bit chose on each link, actually same on Win8.1 .
First link is System, second is the MB. Any advice or ideas be much appreciated. Oh, ASUS wasn't that sure or helpful once before.

The windows 8 BIOS file is the last one you could use. the .CAP is for mother board that came with Window 8 installed. You stated yours came with Windows 7 so as the Win 8 BIOS driver say's is only for Mother Board that came with windows 8.
So that solves you problem. It would be foolish of you to update your BIOS unless you know there is a updated feature that you need. Otherwise it is hazardous to your computer. Is you do be sure to extract the downloaded BIOS directly to a Fat 32 USB Stick. Then use the Ezflash in the BIOS. Doing it this way is almost 100% success, Winflash is less that 50% and lots of bricked notebooks. Not all the sure on Mother Board but seem like in the old days you could pull the BIOS Battery and that would set the BIOS back to original version.

Yes, weird as to see why the motherboard has ROM BIOS listed, but i also know there are revision differences possibly with the same model number boards, mine is rev. 1.0 These listed could be for a different one, like rev. 3.0 ,what scares me also, not telling you here.
Believe me i would not be foolish to do it, without knowing for sure.ty

Could the ROM versus CAP be because they updated the BIOS to UEFI for Windows 8.x? Since yours came with 7 it doesn't have a UEFI BIOS? If so flashing with the file for a UEFI BIOS may brick your MB. The physical BIOS chip is likely different for UEFI?

Mine does have a EFI BIOS, just does not support .CAP BIOS, only .ROM . Just do not get it, as said to clintlgm weird why motherboard are all ROM and system model is all CAP except the one i have 4101 and below. It baffles me why even the number order for each are different too, MB and System Model. It baffled a ASUS's Motherboard tech on phone once too, get that ! At time it was a call about RAM upgrade.

I think you are correct that its the MB Rev that are making the difference, I have the same issues there is an more advanced BIOS for later Rev board I all most screw up and tried the wrong one.
I haven't see the BIOS.CAP before. my notebook 2012 era stock win 7 HP did have a UEFI option and it is default but all the BIOS update are .ROM i.m running 8.1.1 pro 64Bit UEFI no problem but I don't have Safe boot available in my BIOS.

Clintlgm, yes i think so, also because of the board revision and ROM BIOS i was also unable to support Secure boot when i upgraded to Windows 8 originally, even tapped Brink's brain on that one.

This is also true i do not want to screw up and be mad i bricked my MB over being anxious for a BIOS update. New revision board which would be revision 3.0, exact same looking board, just insides are different i guess.

Well i am running in UEFI GPT on 2 SSD's with Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit with all recent updates, board can not go further then 16GB.
Funny is when you look at site for this board all specs are same, except this CAP stuff.

Yea, I almost flashed on the later Rev board like mine. That's why we only get these though the manufacture Asus has all my products listed by serial number. But sorry for me no UEFI on these boards for me. Time to upgrade anyway in the next few months

Yea, one advice do not use there live chat they will tell you it's o.k. use it. On phone sometimes i felt i knew as much as they did and was educating them too. As said there most helpful was a ASUS Motherboard tech, he again was baffled and did say, do not use any BIOS updates, but this was 6 months back or more. All in all i am satisfied with there products. This product was purchased in Nov. 2012 so it did come with EFI. Well seems i will have same BIOS till system becomes obsolete.

Well since they will still talk to me after the warranty was up tells me they ain't so bad either and even said to call if i had any other questions. Most companies will charge you afterwards, just to talk, ASUS doesn't . Experienced that with my last PC.

Even if you do not build your own, ASUS's hardware are in many built PC's. One of the most used.My PC is a ASUS so reason for there parts. Recently changed monitors, bought another ASUS because i liked the one i had before.

Well i will say this post is solved from the posters (Me) decision not to try to flash an update because info is not clear enough and could cause a risk of rendering my system useless.

My 2 desktop PC's are home built with ASUS motherboards. I'm thinking of buying another one for Christmas to upgrade my main desktop. The only issue I had that had me dealing with tech support was with my laptop. There was no utility to burn recovery disks. The only option was to make a recovery thumb drive. For me it was all though e-mail and their replies were slow and incomplete. I haven't had any actual hardware failure type issues so I'll buy from them again.

Yeah, I wouldn't flash the BIOS unless I had to, to fix an issue. Especially if I wasn't sure which file to use. You don't want to find out it was the wrong one the hard way.

I have 2 ASUS desktop PC's/motherboards and a laptop. I'm very satisfied with the hardware. Their tech support not so much. I can't say if they are any better or any worse than any of the other OEM's though. I'll keep buying their stuff.

Yes I agree, I have one G75VW notebook and 2 older Asus P7P55D-E Pro board, the older pro board were BIOS updated to the end as they were working on SATA 3 and other worth while updates. My Notebook I stopped at BIOS 210 that was released right before Windows 8 came out. There are 2 more BIOS upgrades 222 and 223 Also many notebook completely Brick either updating to these or merely changing setting after a successful flash. So there is nothing in either that will make my notebook work better so its really not worth trying.
We have always known that updating the BIOS was dangerous, but it seems that since UEFI/BIOS there have been more problems and bricked notebooks I can't say that about MB as I don't' have any newer ones but I suspect that they are having issues too?

This is the newer way of updating BIOS on newer ASUS Motherboards i saw this once before.
Update your ASUS 8 Series motherboard UEFI BIOS in a flash

In past members here thought i had this feature were showing me links to this.

I had option on this board to make recovery disks. E-mail, well that is worse then when i said there Live Chat was bad. Phone is the better option.

Like i said, will never do anything unless i am close to 100% sure about updating the BIOS. Guess only way is to have somebody with exact same board be successful with one. Seems no other real way to know, if ASUS can't tell you which one is right. As said i was once told months back, not to try it by a Motherboard tech then.

Flashing the BIOS gets easier and safer with the newer motherboards. Dual BIOS and flash recovery make it pretty safe these days. Laptops are even easier and safer providing your battery is in good shape. No worrying about a power bump of power failure happening during your BIOS update. I'm supposed to be able to flash my motherboards from USB thumb drives but haven't got it to work. If I put the file in the root directory of my hard drive it can find it though.

@Alphanumeric, I'll have to disagree for at least Asus Notebooks, In the ROG forums we have had many NB BIOS failures bricked mostly from WinFlash most of these have had to go to Repair to fix them. I can only speak to Asus Notebooks

I've only ever done one Winflash that I can remember. It went OK. I've flashed my laptop at least once from the built in BIOS utility though. Both of my ASUS motherboards have been flashed from the BIOS at least once too. The older one at least twice I think. There is a lot less to go wrong when done directly from the BIOS itself.

I agree with you. I have updated my P7P MB twice last one being back in 2011, and my notebook once it seems that using the built in BIOS EZFlash is pretty safe. However we have been warning off Asus Notebook owners from Win Flash, What has been happening it it appear that the Flash went good, but then when making changes in the new BIOS on save and Exit there getting Bricked Black screen. Some have been able to recover there original BIOS using Ctlr + Home and saving there Notebooks that way. But most have already wiped there hard drives and lost that G75VW.BIN file. and end up sending there notebooks to repair.
