The computer I maintain has a printer that will not connect to Wi-Fi. It was working but now not connecting. I'm trying to connect with Ethernet. The computer requires a driver. I tried to install a driver recommended by HP. I got an error when I tried. And I got a msg of "Access Denied". What is the "Access Denied" coming from? The driver, the printer, the installer or what? If I knew I could concentrate on the culprit. Has anybody had this problem? If so, what did you do to fix?

Please also answer following:
  1. Is it getting IP via DHCP? If this is the case then try [DEL]connecting[/DEL] accessing through \\printername

I'm a novice in the printer area, so please explain the above.

Did you get the drivers from here? Software & driver downloads HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer | HP® Support

There is also an install wizard download there.

I spent most of the afternoon working on that computer. To answer "popeye" : No! I did a simple driver update to get that error.
I did go to the site that you provided the link to. Downloaded the following: en4500_198, hppiws, and hppsdr all exe files. The first one is the full installation file the second is the wizard you mentioned and the third is a "print and scan" troubleshooter.

The first thing I did was disable the wireless adapter so the installation would only see Ethernet. I then ran en4500_198 and got about half way through when the access denied msg appeared. I then allowed it to roll back and restored to two days ago when the printer did work. Ran the file again and got the same error. This time I ran hppiws. This file determines what I need and then, with my permission, installs the software. Got the same error. I quit in disgust and was perplexed. Hope you guys are able to come up with something that works.

Try disabling anti-virus and UAC just while trying to install.

You can also go through Administrator tools and remove the printer that way, in Printer Management. Just find the printer, then remove it from there.

Update on the above. I did all of the above in attempts to install without the error. Finally I decided to restore an image made about 5 weeks ago. I saved the Document folder to reinstall later. Lo and Behold!! No error msg. Install went swimmingly until I got to the connect to the printer part. Couldn't connect. Troubleshooter pointed to no driver. Tried every method I could think of to install the driver. No soap. I did notice that each of the methods mentioned Windows Update. I have been having troubles with Windows Update on that computer so that may be where the problem is.
I think a clean install might be worthwhile at this point. I'm not looking fwd to it because of the user accounts I have to setup and the data I have to save and reinstall. Fortunately, nothing has been installed that makes the registry a problem. I have already used the BELARC ADVISOR to get and write down the Windows 7 key should I need it. Want to get all the ducks in a row before I start this. Anything you guys can think of that will prepare me for this I will appreciate.

Windows update usually fails when there are viruses or malware in the system in critical places.
Heres the thing, its sometimes impossible to clean an infected system while in normal windows mode.
You should start the system in SAFEMODE WITH NETWORKING and run your antivirus and anti malware from there.
I strongly recommend MalwareBytes antimalware in addition to an antivirus.
There are many free antivirus programs, i use Avast-Free and you can use Malwarebytes free for 30 days, though i do recommend purchasing it, its that good!
If you find viruses then you will also have to scan your system restore folder or rename or delete it, as it will also have copies of the virus or malware. I generally rename the restore folder before , then i delete after a reboot just in case theres a problem with the cleaning.
Once the system is clean, try windows update and see if it runs normally now.

I scanned with MSE and then free antimalware by Malwarebytes while in "Safe w/network". MSE found nothing antimalware found a number of PUP's. Quarantined them. Went to normal boot and did Windows Update. All 13 were successful. I'll keep an eye on updates to be sure things remain fixed. Go much further with the Envy 4500 installation. Couldn't connect. After shifting to wireless an fooling with the router I finally got a connectioon. Ethernet still won't connect.

A couple of things I did not understand in your post. 1. What happened prior to the scans and how? 2. The folder you mentioned, I don't know what folder your talking about. Please explain

I just checked the update status on the subject computer. One important and one recommended. Both were successful. So far so good.

I reread our post and I think I have figured out the things that confused me. See if I got it right now. You run a scan with both an anti-virus and anti-malware. If anything found then you run another scan on the restore folder (where is it?) and then rename it and delete after cleanup.

Today, I was able to connect with USB. That's what I always wanted. So let's mark it as SOLVED. Thanks to everyone for the answers.

Deleting infected restore files

Hi Bill, sorry for the delay. I just realized that you may not see the hidden folder, therefore ill explain the windows way of deleting the restore files..

Right click your computer icon (MY COMPUTER)

click properties

click system protection on the left panel

highlight your system drive in the box

click CONFIGURE

then click DELETE

that will delete ALL restore points, after you have done this, create a new restore point after another malwarebytes scan
