Did you bend any pins of the CPU-Socket ?

I've checked that but there's no apparent damage to socket pins. The cpu led is now blinking in a 5 second interval

The red rectangle in the pic is the area exposed to traces of thermal paste... I'm guessing the worst !

I literally washed the motherboard and processor with a mix of ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, then dried parts with a hair dryer. Also checked every screw, cables and power connectors, remounted the machine from scratch, slowly and carefully and...... NOTHING !

Contacting a support partner now. It's becoming a real pain for me.

If it was not metallic paste, it should not make any damage. Could it be that you dropped CPU cooler there ? Take a magnifying glass and check that place for damage. At this point I would take MB out and assemble with just essential parts, adding them one by one and listening for beeps.

Arctic Silver 5 is not electrically conductive and should have not damaged something.

Your issue sounds like bent socket-pin's, which happened once to me so far, when I put one build for a mate together. The CPU just slipped of my finger and hit the socket-pin's without any force and still managed to bend some pin's.

You should check them with a magnifying glass and if you see something, then it's possible to get it repaired.

Asus usually charges ~50 bucks for it.

Good luck with your external support !

    Thanks !

Is the 8-pin (2x4-pin) PSU cable responsible for the phase that feeds the socket? May a tired PSU be coincidently the cause of the "no-cpu" like behaviour? I don't have another compatible PSU to test, but I think may be a hope!

Yes it is, May also feed power to PCI slots and memory in addition to CPU. It feeds to VRM and gets distributed further by it. If your VRM stage is for instance 4+1, 4 feed CPU and 1 would be memory power. If you suspect PSU at all, I would suggest getting a new and better one pronto, it may do damage to your parts if it dies wrong way.

I think it's the move... Mine is a 3 year old PSU intensely used in gaming rigs.
