I have exactly the same problem, only with a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop as outlined here (a Q on the Dell forum). Text: "I've tried the driver (IDT 92HD87B1 High Definition Audio Driver) recommended by Dell (only for Windows 8) @ Product Support | Dell US but it gives me the message "The hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package. The install will be aborted.". I've searched pretty extensively via Google but the 2 or 3 potential drivers/packages I found didn't work out either."

Is there a package/driver Dell or anyone can point me too that will/might work with Windows 8.1?

I've contacted IDT also, who handily enough for me, have this to say: "Thank you for your interest in IDT. Effective Jan 2014 Tempo Semiconductor has acquired the audio devices from IDT. Please contact them for assistance at info@temposemi.com."

So it went on the Tempo. If I hear anything I'll post, but any help or suggestions in the interim (other than calm down) appreciated.

I heard back from Tempo: "Thank you for reaching out to Tempo Semi. If you are having an issue with an audio codec product, please contact Dell directly since they are the system manufacturer and should be able to help you. If the issue with your system is determined to be the audio codec we will support the Dell team directly to help fix this issue.". So I posted this at Dell too- we'll see.

Again, any help appreciated.

OK I tried a # of different drivers, and I know the headset works elsewhere so it's not the problem. That leaves hardware (the external jacks (mike/ears)) or software (drivers). As it happens in trying a number of drivers, I had to twiddle the jacks in and out to alternate between internal and external sound. On one attempt I could hear static and with some fiddling eventually one audio channel. Doing the same with the mike jack I could eventually get this to work using a toothpick to hold it more securely in.

Conclusion? It's the jacks, unfortunate that this

Not sure on options with this as the identified problem. New motherboard for a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop which I've found a really nice machine and (had) hope(d) to upgrade? Possible to replace just jacks/jacks assembly? Quick fix is a USB stick to accommodate headphones/mike jacks for headset- under $10. Longer term, if I need to get a new motherboard maybe best look at a new machine entirely- as it is this unit has a Celeron processor and I was looking at putting an i5 in- total cost for new keyboard/8GB RAM/USB Stick/i5 c$150-200.
