You ate the second one today with that problem. Usually means that the controller card on the drive or for the enclosure has gone bad.

What you can TRY is using Minitool Partition Wizard Boot CD to see if it will Recover the former partition(s) on the drive. IF that doesn't work, then you will need to consider using Data Recovery apps to retrieve files and folders from the drive -- but if the drive is physically damaged, even those will not work.

Most likely. But you can try running Recuva or RecoverMyFiles to see if they (1) see the drive, (2) can access the drive, and (3) find the files and folders on the drive.

If the drive is "toast", none of these will likely work.

I know there is no such thing as a dumb question, but I have one that might come close. Can Windows 8 be installed on an external drive via a USB cable? I have an external drive that I use for backup. If it would work, I would create a new volume on it and install on that.
