Liquid Cooling Intel RTS2011LC

I bought one of these Intel CPU coolers about 3 years ago, RTS2011LC for my Asus P7P55 Mobo. At the time it was quite an improvement on air cooling (Hyper 212) when overclocking.

I later upgraded to the ASUS P8Z77V-De Luxe and fitted the cooler to that machine.

My PC is usually running 24/7, and with a moderate O/C 4-4.2GHz.

Now recently, (last 3 months) I had noticed that the CPU fan was getting louder and louder and first assumed it must some garbage running in the background. After checking and running the usual Malwarebytes Win Defender Etc. I found no problems.

It was at this point i checked the CPU temps and this is where it starts to get interesting; ASUS Suite, reports the CPU temperature at about 65C, which is about 15 degrees higher than I would have expected given what was running. I then checked Real Temp and it showed almost 78C with the same load (not more than 20%)

I then decided to re run Prime 95 as i had a good idea what sort of temps. I used to get before (85C or so)

When I ran Prime, ASUS reports 84C and holding steady, OK I thought until I checked Real Temp - It was showing 105C on all 4 cores and the CPU was throttling back to 3.2 GHz!

After fiddling around for a while disconnecting various fans on the MB it appeared that the CPU fan on the Intel radiator made no difference to the temperatures whether on or off - the coolant pipes were as expected, on hot and one cold.

I checked the temperature of the fan output and it was cool rather than noticeably warm as it used to be.

Well, today I removed the cooler and there was barely a drop of liquid in the darn thing, it was just pumping air.

I understood these things were supposed to be good for at least 5 years and maintenance free, obviously not in thi case.

I dunked the entire system into a tub of hot water to pressurize it to see if there were any leeks, nothing to be found!

It would appear that the liquid must have somehow evaporated.

So if any of you are running the Intel cooler for an extended period and your CPU temps start rising gradually at first, it might be worth checking out.

I am going to drill a hole in the Rad and see if I can top it up, maybe fit a small refillable header etc. (as an experiment)

I bough the new Corsair H100i today and chopped a few chunks out of my case and managed to get it running - 4.2GHz and 39C - boy this beast knocks the spots off the Intel. (75C @ 4.2GHz on Prime 95, all stock voltages)

Hope this might prove helpful to someone in the future - Also, keep an eye on ASUS temperature monitoring from AI Suite, it never rose above 84C despite the core temps being 105C, not a good feeling with that as a safety net.

Wow! This is good to know as I have the same Intel branded Asetek cooler on my i7-3770k, overclocked to 4.6GHz. My temps have been consistent over the past 18 months but I'll continue to monitor them closely. Thanks for letting us know about this!

You are more than welcome! The good thing is that despite there being no liquid circulating (or very little) The machine does not burn itself up but will idle around 50-60C. (I was in hospital over the weekend and it had been left on).

I know the CPU's will shutdown after a critical temperature is reached, so no danger of "burning up" a CPU, but the fact that the cooling liquid (polyethylene glycol, I believe) was "lost" or evaporated disturbs me as I was hoping these closed loop systems would last 5 years or longer.

I was certainly hoping for a lot longer life than I got, I am not sure if it is relevant or not but where I am my ambient room temperatures are between about 30C and 37C during the day and only drop to low twenties during the nights in winter, no air con only fans - it might be partially due to this that the coolant has evaporated.

Like I said in the original post, I dunk tested the entire Intel system in hot (65C) water bath to try to find if it was due to a leak but I found nothing. I also was a regular case opener and am sure I would have noticed any fluids if it had been any sort of major 1 off leak. Again, the temperatures gradually rose over about a 3 month period, so it sort of crept up on me.

I liked the Intel cooler, it was quiet and reasonable for my O/C, however it cannot begin to compare with this new Corsair H100i that I picked up yesterday, totally different ball game altogether, it has me itching to start cranking up the motherboard speeds!

It is also the only time I have ever seen my CPU temperature cooler than my motherboard temps!

I don't know what software you use for monitoring temps. but be very wary of ASUS AI Suite, it was topping out at 84C and never rose above that, it was only when I compared it with Real Temp that I discovered there was about a 10C difference (I believe AI measures Tcase and Real Temp measures Tcore) all of the time between the two programs, however once the coolant stopped cooling, AI stayed at 84C while RT was showing 105C on all 4 cores and checking CPUZ showed that the CPU was throttling down to about 3 GHz.

I'd love to have a go at doing my own liquid cooling system here, but unfortunately a lot of the kit is not easily available. If i had to import from US or Europe it can cost me as much as 300% import duties.

That is my kit: Click

Maybe have a look around and maybe you can find something in your price-range: Click

Here is another shop in the UK: Click

... and another one: Click

But be careful, because the radiators of custom-loops are much thicker than the cheap closed-loop ones !

Don't be afraid, as the kit's are not too hard to put together.

I would not recommend to put a kit together yourself for the first time, because you would have to do some reading first, as not everything would fit or work together, like different tubing sizes / fittings etc.pp.

Edit: I just saw, that you have the UK-Flag's, but also Thailand in your profile. Where do you live ?

Edit-2: Maybe that offer here would be an option: Click

:)

Thanks for the links! Some nice kit you have there!
I am in Northern Thailand, that is why we get hammered on import duties. I am going to have a go at making my own cooling system one day, doesn't scare me, my work involves a lot of hi tech, hi volume electronic manufacturing with a lot of custom production equipment - However, the work is in Shanghai where you can get almost anything, not like Northern Thailand.

I have a few projects in mind, I am going to de lid my i7-3770K and remove the Intel thermal paste and take it into work where we can make up an 8 thou solder stencil and try putting the heat spreader through our reflow oven and see if we can solder the heatspreader back on to see if we can improve the conductivity. (we have some pretty smart reflow engineers here!).

As I said in an earlier post I am going to drill out the Intel Rad to see if I can fit a header tank and use it as an out of case experimental cooler - If that doesn't work I have a huge old Toyota Tiger Diesel radiator that holds about 20 litres that could come in handy, ha ha.

Sounds awesome to me !

I know a guy which uses a Toyota Hilux Radiator for his loop. A car radiator would be maybe easier to get in your area or a fridge-compressor.

Funny you mention a fridge compressor, I have just bought a new fridge and have stripped out an old Hitachi fridge compressor which I am using to blow my truck tyres up.

How could you use a fridge compressor to integrate into a cooling system (The gas has been released into the ozone already) But I am all ears and it sounds interesting.

Thank you for that, it is absolutely amazing video, -4C @ 99% load, that guy is pretty serious.
Who would have thought you could do that from an old fridge unit.

Yeah, it's amazing, but I have possible not the skills, time and space for such a project and I'm married as well.

I paired once my Thermaltake FRIO OCK with 2x EBMPapst-Fan's (355m3/h airflow each) which sounded like a Jet-Turbine and I had to use a Fan-Controller to keep it at ~40% speed, otherwise my wife would have had divorced me.

Just have a look how "professional" it was put together (cable ties / the side panel wouldn't fit anymore / highly professional noise reduction with some foam):

But I got my 2600k up to @5012MHz back then (AirCon running).

;)

You have to be inventive with this stuff! I too an am married, so it is a bit of a balancing act to keep everyone happy. I told you I just bought the Corsair Hydro H100i cooler- well it does not fit inside the HAF 932 case so I had to take a pair of sheet metal cutters and cut out the top homeycomb of the case to get it mounted. The fans and rad. are on top of the case, very effective cooling, not pretty to look at and you wouldn't want to go poking round in the dark as the fans might cut your fingers off!

But as you have shown, some of these mods. actually work OK!

Thanks for all of the links, there was some very interesting reading there. I liked the one with the heat exchanger, I think you could probably adapt one of those passive coolers from the bottled water machines to cool the processor, condensation is always my worry with these super cooled gadgets, especially here in the tropics.

Keep in touch, let me know if you are trying anything new.

Yeah, condensation worries me a bit too, but when you have a look how they prepare the hardware for a LN2-Session, then you realize that it's not too hard to prevent any damage.

I have nothing planned atm., but if I will let you know.

Our home is not insulated, so it's quite cold in winter and very hot in summer and our humidity is usually quite high as well.

:)

You have to be a bit lucky to get the CPU out of a good batch.

My 4770k runs nicely around 4.5 GHz but temps get higher than I'd like to see them. While burning core temps reach +80°C. I have a H60 with 4 fans.
