Razer Mouse - USB 3.0 port using 2.0

Just as the title says

Hi guys I got a new mouse a couple of days back, it's one of those fancy Razer mouses with 12 buttons on the side that is used for gaming and stuff. I have an issue when I try to use usb 3.0 instead of 2.0 ports. ( my tower only has like 2 2.0 ports so I try to use those for other things ) I am trying not to buy a usb hub before somebody says it :)

On games ( fullscreen or Windowed ) quickslot controls where you can use the numbers on your mouse I can't use the 3.0 port as it won't recognize the side buttons but it will on the 2.0 port.

I am guessing this is a driver problem but I am unsure. Neither the native mouse driver for Windows nor the fancy Cloud Synapse driver 2.0 works. Is there another one I don't know about or is there a fix to this?

It could be that the 3.0 port is being provided by an add-on chip on the motherboard, rather than native to the motherboard itself, which could explain the compatibility issue.

While I understand that your ports are limited, plugging the mouse into a 3.0 port is a total waste of bandwidth and is not going to have any kind of advantage over using the 2.0 spec. Can't you just unplug one of your existing devices that is occupying the 2.0 port, and use the 3.0 for that to free up a 2.0 port for the mouse?

From my own past experience, using a 3.0 port for a mouse has occasionally caused abnormal mouse behavior.

You could also try looking in BIOS for an option to set your 3.0 port to "legacy" or the 2.0 spec. Some BIOS' will give you that option...

Will look in BIOS tomorrow when I am back at home thanks.

I keep my usb wifi adapter plugged into the port and it's kind of large so it takes up about 1.5 ofg the room of the 2.0 port. For whatever reason and I can't explain this either if I use the 3.0 port with the wifi adapter it will disconnect me quite a bit over the use of using it. If I just use the 2.0 port though it doesn't start to overheat. I haven't figured that out for the life of me yet either. But as I had kind of deduced what was going on there that's why I was trying to only use my 3.0 ports for other stuff.

The specific port in reference as far as the 3.0 is one that is directly on the motherboard and is not a port chip. Here is kind of a a really bad imagery here of my back of my pc

[3][3][3]
[3][3]
[hdmi][vga]
[2][2][ethernet]
[3][3]
[3][something different, don't remember what]

the 2 ports being where they are they are extremely difficult to fit two items in there with the wifi adapter being so large. I keep the keyboard and mouse on top or trying cause the wires aren't as long as my external HDD and other usb products.

Maybe get a short USB cable to use with the Wi-Fi which would unblock the other 2.0 port. I have the USB 3 version of this. The end is a heavy unit so holds your adapter upright.

Hi there

I have to agree that using a USB3 port for a mouse is a total waste -- even a USB2 HDD plugged into a USB3 port can often get better performance (not of course up to USB3 speeds though !!) as the USB2 device will be able to use the full USB2 speed which it sometimes can't do on a USB2 port - due to MOBO / bus restrictions or being shared with other devices on the same BUS - not necessarily in the same PORT.

For an SSD though use a SATA==>USB connector - plugged into a USB3 port that SSD will FLY !!!! (SATA==>USB3 connector) but it still will do OK with a SATA==>USB2 connector plugged into either a USB2 or USB3 port.

Cheers

I am trying to refrain from having to purchase other techie goodies at the moment sadly as I already have several pre-ordered video games at bestBuy.

If I use the wifi adapter with 3.0 my internet will constantly disconnect ( I have no idea why ) so as a gamer I can't let that happen so often.

I am kind of getting the feeling people don't believe it is a driver issue/software problem, and leaning towards port problems? Why exactly would a 2.0 usb device not have all functions in the upgraded port.

At this point from what I am reading I am looking at either have internet, and no mouse functions on the side or mouse functions on the side and no internet. :(

It most definitely could be a driver issue - but that is the problem. Most mouse/keyboard mfg's don't bother creating drivers for the 3.0 spec. simply because they know that people reserve their 3.0 ports for devices that can utilize the higher bandwidth - actually, as you probably already know, most mouse/keyboard mfg's don't bother with drivers at all, and simply rely on Microsoft's generic drivers.

If you've already tried Razer's most recent drivers, you could try some older ones. You could also try Microsoft's 'Keyboard & Mouse Center' download, which will give you extra mouse customization, and it might work, but is probably a long shot. I'm not sure if the Keyboard and Mouse center control panel is included with Windows 8.1, because I don't have 8.1 - it's only available as a download with Windows 8 though.

Have you tried any other devices in the suspect port besides your WiFi adaptor? Try plugging some other stuff into it just to see if they function properly, because if the mouse, WiFi, and then something else gives you trouble, then the problem is most likely the port itself. Make sure your chipset drivers are all current, and check in device manager for the USB controllers - sometimes deleting and reinstalling the USB drivers will clear things up.

I have been able to use my keyboard, and all other devices just fine minus wifi adapter/mouse with 3.0.

Not sure myself if I can use the Windows Keyboard and mouse center but I will look into it. Thanks for the tip. I will also be looking for some older razer drivers thanks.

That's actually a pretty clever idea and it is only $5. So far this isn't solved however I probably need to buy one or more of these anyway just to have on hand for my business. Will get one and do as you said and report back if this helps.

Thanks for the outside of the box idea so to speak.

Those headers would normally go to the front panel USB ports on your case, well some of them anyway. My cases usually only have two front panel USB ports so I use one or two of hose brackets to add a few more ports at the back of my case. My older motherboards only have 4 motherboard mounted USB ports out the back so a having a couple more doesn't hurt. Those brackets are relatively inexpensive anyway. If you hunt a round you should be able to find one with 4 USB ports on it and uses two motherboard headers. That way you only lose the one expansion slot.
