Adding 'old' HDD to New pc

I was going to add my 'old' 2 TB SATA HDD to my new pc as a secondary drive to accompany the 1 TB SSHD drive, but first I inserted it into a dock to check that everything that could be moved, was. It said that the HDD needed formatting as the format was wrong. It is NTFS. Is it saying wrong drive because it was in a 32 and was docked to a new 64 ??

    Hi there

Just Format as NTFS -- "Nullo problemo". I'd also format it as a GPT drive too -- saves problems with L ogical / Primary partitions etc.

    Should work just fine.

32-bit hdd attached to a 64-bit system is not an issue. Can't say why it reports that it needs to be formatted, something must have gotten fouled up. You will need to format it but whatever data that was on it is pretty much lost.

MBR and GPT are different partitioning schemes, MBR is the older system used in previous Windows sysytems while GPT is the newer system used in Win 8 (used with computers that have a UEFI BIOS). GPT is more flexible and works better with larger disks. You don't format the disk as GPT you need to partition the disk as a GPT vs MBR. You can select MBR or GPT in Disk Management when you delete the existing partitions and create new ones.

    Hi there

Just to add to your note -- if the drive is NOT used as the BOOT drive then you don't need a UEFI computer to be able to use a GPT formatted drive.

There's a bit of confusion on this -- it's only if you need the GPT drive to be the BOOT drive where you HAVE to have a UEFI enabled BIOS (not necessarily a PROTECTED BOOT system --that's another issue entirely).

    No sugar with mine!!!

The data was losable anyway, all I had to do was re install SH4, Far Cry 2, SM Pirates and some puzzle games. No big deal. I just took side of pc off to check wiring, seems to be plenty of power couplings but sod all interface connections for the SATA disks I want to add.

What do you men "no sugar ?, if that's MB from your specs, you have 2 SATA3 ports and 2 SATA2 ports that are good enough for spinner HDDs.

    Hi there
On a lot of older computers while they might have SATA connectors on the MOBO they invariably don't have enough SATA POWER connectors -- not to worry though as you can use the standard 4 pin MOLEX==>SATA power adapter (and the other way around if you want to add an older HDD with the Molex pins even if it is a SATA HDD).
