Extremely slow USB performance .. USB2.0 / USB 3.0

Here is the deal .. Windows 8.1 and I have an Asus computer that is less than 2 months old.

But the USB performance is pretty poor .. I thought it was my USB stick, so bought a new one USB 3.0. But it was worse in my test below.

I did a test. Copied a 190 MB file to each USB Stick from my pc .. I am getting about 8.63 MB/Sec (USB 2.0) or 22 sec for the transfer - 6.12 MB / Sec (USB 3.0) or 31 sec for the data transfer. Hardly acceptable in my mind.

They were not done at the same time .. but one after the other.

If anyone has any thoughts I am open to them.

Thanks

Hi there. Did this machine come with 8.1 or did you upgrade from 8? If upgraded you may need updated USB drivers.

How do the USB controllers look in Device Manager. Are the yellow triangle warnings at all. WinKey/X > Device Manager.

Sadly USB speed for pen drives can be very disappointing. The speed usually announced is rarely what you get in real life.

Still there might be some things to check first :
* As Gypsie said, check the latest drivers from your PC/motherboard manufacturer. If there's a new BIOS for your machine, you might try to update it too.
* Enable Write Caching : Write-Caching - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
* Make sure your BIOS makes use of USB 2/3 : for compatibility reasons with older hardware, most BIOS are set to use Legacy mode on USB device. Change it if you want better performance.

The machine came with Windows 8 .. upgraded to 8.1. There are no updated drivers and the bios is up to date.

I tried the write caching .. no difference.

I will just live with it, as honestly it really is a minor but still a bit annoying issue.

You should also check your USB settings in the bios, it might help, here is a screenie of the asus bios :

As you can see there is a legacy mode that you can safely disable under win 8. It's for older OSes. And you can choose a high performance profile for the USB controller, in the screenshot called HI-Speed.

I did all of that .. the changing of the bios and no difference.

My bios is much much newer than that displayed. But the concept was the same. But did not make a difference.

can you try the USB key in another computer? Like somebody else said, USB keys are often terrible. My USB 2.0 and 3.0 hard drive docks with full size 3.5" or 2.5" 7,200RPM drives or SSD's fly. But USB keys come nowhere close.

Hate to say this, and this may or may not actually help your particular issue, but you might want to consider reinstalling Windows 8.1 clean (no upgrade). My bluetooth drivers kept causing a BSOD on my tablet after I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 because the drivers got irreparably hosed in the upgrade. I had to do a clean install of 8.1 to get my bluetooth working.

Your USB drivers might be hosed the same way.
