Cannot use third party DVD writing software with windows 8

I have an odd problem.

If I use the windows 8.1 built in CD / DVD burning feature I can write to DVD -R with no issues (including creating a finalised ISO disk).

If I try to use ANY third party product to burn on CD / DVD the software writes the session to the disk but then hangs completely when trying to close the session. The drive just shuts down and the software is sat there doing nothing. The process can't be killed in task manager and the PC wont even restart. The only way to restart is to cycle the power on the PC.

The DVD drive is the second of 4 SATA Drives in the system and I suspect its the fact that it is SATA that is the problem.

This is independant of the media make or type I use. I know its not the drive because it works using the built in windows 8 feature. It also use to burn o.k. using imgburn and cd burner xp when I had windows 7 installed.

Has anyone encountered this problem and know what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

I have SATA CD/DVD burner drives. They work without problems. The fact its SATA is not the problem.

Although I use Nero, both of the programs you mention work OK in Windows 8/8.1. I've used them, for testing, and didn't have to disable the built in Windows CD/DVD burning features.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the optical drive then LEFT click "Uninstall" Do not uninstall the driver (the only driver is the built in Microsoft driver for optical drives). Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. If there were any corruptions this will fix it.

Also, if you have Nero installed, and InCD installed, uninstall the InCD as it can interfere with burning functions.

The point is to try Imgburn with the built-in disabled as there may be a conflict.

+1 on InCD. On many multimedia forums they won't even handle your question if InCD is installed. It's broken.

Instead of trying umpteen different burning programs, is there any way for you to try a different drive? Maybe buy a new drive (they're not very expensive), try it, if it works better, keep it, if it doesn't work any better, return it.

Windows built-in can conflict with other burning software. It only takes a few minute to disable it and try other software. If it's not the built-in then it's most likely Nero. Nero does not play well. That's why you have to download a removal tool to get rid of it.

Running Windows built-in burner and another burner is like running 2 AV shields simultaneously. There will be side effects most of the time.

I've NEVER disabled Windows built-in burn stuff and have not had any conflicts with 3rd party programs such as ImgBurn.
