~ or ` Key is not working properly

Hello,

Since I have had windows 8 introduced in our office I have found on my laptop the ~ key (one at the upper left corner before 1) not working properly. I have to long press it (for around 1-2 seconds) to provide ~~~~ or ```` before the key is released. First I thought might be a physical problem with the key, but similar is the behavior found on the on screen keyboard and I have to long click that too.

Thus, I am unable to get a ` or ~ (i.e. with the shift) easily.

Please see if any of you experts could help me detect and resolve this annoying error.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Faraz, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Which input language (keyboard layout) you are using?

OK.

Interesting. In Windows 7 and earlier versions it is possible to select either a standard EN-US (English - United States) input language or an international variant called EN-US International. If you had Windows 7, your issue would be easily explained and the solution would be to change from EN-US International to EN-US.

If interested, see these posts for more details about how differently apostrophes (`, ~ and so on) and apostrophe keys behave in Windows 7 and earlier versions using EN-US International:

But: You have Windows 8, which no longer uses the EN-US International input language. This makes your issue interesting; I have tried now for at least half an hour to reproduce your issue but am unable to do it.

To continue, I would like to see two screenshots. First, post your Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Language here (example below from my PC):

Now click the link Advanced settings at top left in the Language window, then open the drop down menu under Override for default input method to show the complete language list, make a screenshot showing this list open and post it here (as shown in screenshot below):

I am really sorry Kari but actually here in my country when electric power breaks down no internet connection works. I was not even able to reply. Please pardon me. Shall send you the images as soon as I reach my office.

Kari,
I don't know why but the requisite screenshot is not uploading.
Anyway it is showing Use language list (recommende) while the list upon opening shows only the item:
English United States (US)

I wanted to see the screenshots to get as much information as possible. Please answer these questions:

- Is the installation media you used EN-US, alternatively is this is a computer which came with preinstalled EN-US Windows?
- If not the above and you have used EN-US language pack to get Windows in English, which is the original install language?
- Which other languages if any are installed, both display languages (language packs) and input languages (keyboard layouts)?
