Samsung 840 Evo 500GB SSD for Toshiba MQ01ABD100 1TB HDD?

    Hi guys

    I want to replace my already present TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 1TB 2.5" 9.5mm SATA-II (3.0Gbps) Internal HDD with Samsung 840 EVO 250GB/500GB 2.5" 7mm SATA-III 6Gbps (Compatible with SATA 3Gb/s & SATA 1.5Gb/s) Internal SSD (MZ-7TE250BW/MZ-7TE500BW).

Is it possible for me to do that?
When I asked about this with service center they asked to bring the laptop to the shop as they have to check if there is slot for that & whether the connectors are suitable for the new SSD. I don't know what they meant by that.

Here are some links that could help:
My laptop model: HP Pavilion 15-n209tx Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

    Product number: F6C49PA

I could find that the connector is Serial-ATA 7-pin for both of them, not sure - just googled it.

How will I know if SSD can be replaced for the HDD, is it necessary for me to go to the service center and check it out if there is slot & drive can be upgraded?
HP product manual doesn't say anything about SSD compatibility for my laptop, they have listed only HDDs (both 7mm & 9mm are compatible it seems),

There is a 24GB mSATA SSD that is listed in the manual , but it could only act as cache memory right?

I'm planning for migration from HDD to SSD & boot from SSD, would I be able to do that with the softwares available in the Samsung site?

    Please advise..

    Thanks in advance

Most SSD's will fit just fine in your laptop. Sata Connector is standard but to make sure that it will fit, you can get the physical dimension from the data sheet for your current HD and the Samsung. I don't think you need to bring it in for them to check.

You can use free Macrium to clone the whole drive then boot from it. You'll need a Sata-USB Adapter to do this.

Yes, i checked the dimensions, they're almost identical except for minor changes, will that be a problem?
Will there be any difficulty to boot from SSD as it's capacity is only half of the HDD, ? (NB: Total used drive size including recovery partition is about 80Gigs)

Anything more I have to keep in mind during upgradation?

Which is better app for migration - Samsung migration tool or macrium free? got to see many user reviews about Samsung tools from amazon.

Could you post some USB to sata adapter from online stores ?

    Thanks for the help.

Dimension: no, should not be a problem.
80 GBs ??? What do you have in your C drive ? Perhaps, you have a lot of personal data stored in it also. I would strongly suggest to separate your personal data to another partition or Drive. For Windows C: Drives, 80Gbs is ideal.
No, you should not have any problem booting from the SSD. But before cloning it, save your personal data to an external HD to keep Windows partition small, defrag it prior to cloning.

I know nothing about it even I own couple of Samsung SSD's (830 & 840). Always use Macrium and it has not failed me yet.

Here's what I have. It supports both USB2/USB3 and HD up to 4 GB's

    Thanks for the quick reply
Ok, I'll move my personal files to external drive.
    Few more doubts:

For cloning, should I only clone C:drive alone or whole HDD to SSD? If its whole HDD then total used space is 80GB, is that not possible - so that recovery partition(D: drive) too get cloned into SSD? (I have only 2 partitions C: & D: )

I'll try defragging whole HDD before cloning starts.

Here are the dimensions I mentioned earlier, please verify if its a problem:

    Samsung EVO: Dimension (WxHxD): 100 x 69.85 x 6.8mm
    Toshiba HDD:
    Dimensions (W)x(D)x(H) 69.85 mm (2.75") x 100.0 mm (3.94") x 9.5 mm (0.37")

Macrium has an option to allow you to backup just the partitions for Windows OS. This will include all the hidden partitions + C: drive.
So it is better to make a backup of those partitions and restore to the SSD instead of cloning.

Without recovery partition, just C: drive being backed up & restored, will SSD boot up without any problems?

Is there no option of compete cloning for me? Is it not possible in macrium or aomei?

You need to backup all the associated patitions + C: dirve:
For MBR style: the Recovery Partition is about 350MB (Might be different in size if Windows OEM is used) + C: Drive.
    For GPT style: there's 4 partitions: 300MB, 100MB, 128MB Reserved unallocated + C: Drive.

Using Macrium, there's an option with one click, it will pick all needed partitions to backup. Go to youtube and search for Macrium, there's tons of Video showing you how to do it. Very simple.

I'm using oem product and there is a recovery partition D: drive which contain OEM factory OS, drivers & oem bloatwares. I'm asking about that one, what about it, will that can be too cloned along with c: drive. Will that work in the new SSD if need arise after clonning?

Thanks topgundcp, it was really helpful, thanks again for taking time for replying.

Since your source disk is larger than the destination disk, you might have to adjust the partition size on the destination disk.
This video shows you how to adjust the partition size. In your case to need to shrink the partition to fit all the partitions into it.
v5: How to clone a disk (Clone Disk, v5)

EDIT: I am not sure if the free version will allow you to do this, you might have to buy the Standard Versio.
