Wish to add SSD for Boot Drive as well as backup.

If I add a SSD (Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive) Can I use it as the boot drive as well as the backup drive? Then use the existing 1TB HDD as the main storage drive. I need a backup drive so I figure if this works then it could give me a performance boost as well. How could this best be done to satisfy both needs? Would I put all the programs on the SSD and all the data on the HDD? My current drive is at 119GB used space. How do I determine how much back up space is needed?
As you can probably tell I'm really new at this and if this isn't the right place to be looking for information then please tell me or maybe suggest a different place.

You sure can but what good does it do if your drive goes bad then there goes your backup.

My thought was that the 1TB HDD would contain all the data files and the SDD would hold the backups of them as well as be the boot drive and contain most application programs. So the documents and photos etc. would be on the HDD with backups on the SDD. If the SSD fails then I would still have the HDD files.
I'm assuming that the backups are compressed and need less space or is that a false assumption?

You would have to repartition that drive first, otherwise if Windows goes belly up, there goes all of your backup. As far as compression goes, it's up to program you use to do backups and of course type of file, some can't be compressed at all but some like text 90% or more. Zip or RAR some of those files and you''ll see the difference.
