Computer HDD Error on Gateway Laptop.

On my laptop, an error showed up suddenly last morning. It said something along the lines of this "Your computer's Hard Drive is failing". In more details it was my Western Digital drive, labeled at C:/. I instantly shut it off. It is a NE model laptop. Any ideas why?

That is probably a SMART notification which means there MAY be a problem. I would strongly urge you to create a backup image of the hard drive to an external hard drive and then keep it current. That way when (or if) the drive does die, you can install a new one, restore the image and you're ready to go.

A good, free program for this is Macrium Reflect Free.

    Info here on S.M.A.R.T.:

Can you lead me to a screenshot of a S.M.A.R.T error ?

Did not find any screen shots, sorry. Typical SMART error messages listed here:

Hard Drive Failure Errors: Imminent Failure, Smart, BIOHD, HD535, etc | HP® Support

    Common SMART errors are:

    Hard disk failure is imminent.
A hard drive in the system reports that it may fail.
Smart failure imminent, back up your data
Error 1720 Imminent Hard Drive Failure
HP Hardware Diagnostic errors that start with HD521

The use of SMART does not prevent all hard drive failures, but it can give you the opportunity to back up your personal files and replace the hard drive before it fails.
    Okay, just found

Sorry, that doesn't match the error screen I have. I rememeber it as this: It was in the desktop GUI, and it had 2 options "Backup your data" and "Ask me later". The title of it was "Microsoft Windows" and it had at the bottom "More details" , When I clicked it displayed the hard drive name, and the location of the drive.

That's all I could find. If you get it again, take a picture with a digital camera then upload it here if you want.

That is pretty definite. I suggest you do as it says and do an immediate backup (image backup using Macrium Reflect Free is a good choice) then buy a new hard drive. Once you have the new drive, clone the old to the new then get rid of the old one.

I dont really need my files though. I need just the OS. How can I manage that?

If you have a install DVD then use it to install to the new hard drive once it's installed. If not, install the new hard drive as a slave or on a higher SATA port number then clone the old drive to the new one. Remove the old drive, move the new drive to the SATA port the old drive was connected to then boot. It should come right up.
