    Don't see the optical drive unless you start it up?

    Does anybody else find it a bit disconcerting you don't see the optical drive unless you start it up?

    My drive shows up without doing a thing. I have seen a few posts where the optical drives never show up. May be a driver bug in the ports where its not seeing the drive properly.

    Hi there
    I think in Control panel under folder options you can uncheck the "Hide Empty Drives" .

    Cheers

    @Jimbo - I have that unchecked.

    Optical drive not visible in explorer until I do something with it - i.e. pop in a dvd.

    Looks ok in Device manager.

    I thought that was normal for win8 - obviously not.

    Hi there
    there might be another setting somewhere --I remember there was a problem with an earlier release of windows with security sometime back when disks would automount and automatically start a setup.exe program if it found one.

    cheers

    Yep, definitely not normal for Win8. My drive happily sits in Windows Explorer's Computer view as well as is the left side menu thing even when I have not done anything with it since a boot, no matter how long it has been.

    It seems to be actually better in Windows 8 because the drive never spins at all, not even when I go to access it in Windows Explorer.
    Only actually running something off of it starts the spinning.

    Ya know the deal....check chipset drivers to be updated, see if there is a new firmware for the drive and make sure there are no upper/lower filters in the reg.

    Other than that, curse at the chipset maker so they fix it lol.
