Yesterday I formatted my computer and today I was updating it to Windows 8.1 again. Everything was fine except I forgot to disconnect my hdd. During the update, it said it was detecting and fixing errors. When the update finished, I tried to open my hdd and it wasn't accessible. How can I recover the data?

If the drive is readable and listed under 'Disk Management' you've some hope left of recovering data from it. Excluding the recommendations of CountMike, I'd strongly recommend to try any of the software mentioned below :

RecoverMyFiles - Paid
Stellar Phoenix Partition Recovery - Paid
Kroll OnTrack File Recovery - Paid

P.S. I don't believe that trying freeware for such crucial tasks would be a good fit.

Some of that free stuff like Easus differ only in corporate networked environments support, so for home use are just fine.

Connect the External HD to another computer running earlier Windows and see if you have the same problem. If you can read the data from it then the USB interface might be incompatible with Windows 8.1. If you can't then run the recovery program as suggested above.

Thanks a lot for sharing such useful information and providing details regarding other products. However, you can use Remo Recover tool to restore external hard drive corrupted after updating Windows 8.1 a.

With recovery software I was able to fix it, I guess it wasn't much of corrupted, rather in an unreadable state. Thanks guys :)

Running Disk Check command on such corrupted drives is sometimes useful. Unreadable drives are easily detected by recovery programs and recovery can be performed as usual.

Post back how it goes.
