Solved USB devices seen in BIOS, but not in Windows 8.1

Hello,

I have recently built a new computer and installed Windows 8. All was running fine (including USB devices such as iPhone, flash drive etc), however since upgrading to Windows 8.1, none of my USB devices are showing up at all. Oddly, the mouse and keyboard still work.

When I go into the BIOS, all my devices (iPhone, Flash drive, keyboard and mouse etc) all show up in there, so I'm guessing it's a driver/Windows 8.1 issue that I'm missing?

I have been to the ASUS website and downloaded all the drivers I can find, but still no luck.

Anyone have any suggestions here?

My motherboard is an "Asus Z97 Pro". I have tried contacting Asus support, but they are completely useless!

Thanks in advance
James

Hi,

As your motherboard have 2 USB controllers (Intel and ASMedia), the update might have overwrite the drivers and instead the generic Microsoft drivers are being used. You can try to download and install the Intel Chipset drivers and Asmedia USB drivers of your motherboard which is intended for Windows 8.1 from the Asus Support site.

Thanks for the reply - I tried downloading and installing the Intel drivers from the Asus website for my motherboard, but just got the error "Operating system not supported", even though I selected "Windows 8.1" from the dropdown on their website. I also downloaded the "DriverScanner" and it did mention that "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" is out of date, so there definitely is a problem. Trouble is I can't apparently get the right drivers! Is there any other way?

I would try downloading and installing the chip-set drivers.

OK, I do believe if you right click on it and go to properties, you'll see a error message under the Device Status in the General tab.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

It sure did - all working now! Thanks so much for your help :)

For others with a similar issue, I went to Device Manager, right-clicked the faulty device and selected "Uninstall". I then right-clicked any of the other devices there and selected "scan for hardware changes". All my USB devices were then recognised :)
