    Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000

My Bluetooth mouse is not working. PC settings seems to see the mouse but cannot connect to the mouse. It tries but, the mouse willnot activate.

If the PC Settings screen says it sees the Bluetooth mouse but also says "offline", I remove it from the list. Then, I click on the Bluetooth icon then click on "add Bluetooth device". This sends me to the PC Settings screen where I click on "Add Device". It looks and finds the Bluetooth mouse then tries to connect with it. That process never completes. It shows the device but indicates it is "offline".

Has anyone had similar problems with the Bluetooth mouse or any other Bluetooth devices?

This is a bit of an issue for me because I have arthritic hands and it is easier for me to use a mouse than a trackpad or my fingers.

The laptop is an HP TouchSmart tm2. It has 4 gB memory and a 280 gB hard drive. Running Windows 8 Consumer Beta, Build 8250.

The mouse worked just fine under W7.

I use that mouse with my VAIO SR290 notebook and Windows 8.

Try removing any instance of the mouse from Devices and Printers (leftover from previous attempts). Then turn on the mouse, press the little button on the bottom to turn on "discovery" mode, then try to add the mouse again.

    Best of luck to you!

I assume you have the BT transceiver (dongle) plugged in, or is it built-in? Look in Device Manager and check to see how many BT Transceivers are registered under Bluetooth Radios. Typically only 1 transceiver can be recognized at one time so disable any others that are shown. Reboot and see if it improves.

Also, add your device using the 'Devices and Printers' page in the Control Panel' using 'Add Devices and Printers'. I had an issue with adding my Bluetooth Microsoft keyboard. The Metro 'Devices' interface under 'Settings' kept asking for a pass number or something and I couldn't add the Bluetooth keyboard that way. Normally the key number is automatically generated when adding my keyboard. To solve this I went to 'Devices and Printers' in the Control Panel and added it via 'Add Devices or Printers' at the top left hand corner of the screen in 'Devices and Printers'. The system then generated the automatic key needed to add my device.

Did that invoke the Metro-style 'device being added' page ot the old style one?

Thanks to all of you for replying. I have tried everything suggested here. Currently, W8's "PC Settings" (which seems to be W8 version of "Control Panel" in earlier Windows) shows "Generic Bluetooth Radio" and "Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000" installed. The mouse is shown as offline. Conventional "Control Panel" also shows both the radio and the mouse installed. The mouse still does not work.

I have done complete shutdowns and restarts with the Bluetooth dongle both in and out. I have watched as both the W8 and "Control Panel" make connections and they never seem to complete. In other words, W8 is seeing the mouse but not connecting. Only once, 3 days ago, did I see the connection procedure complete in W8. That one time the mouse was working. Unfortunately, after shutting down the laptop, the mouse no longer worked and it would not connect

Is this answer any help, it's for Windows 7 but the same principle would apply.

Thanks again Peter for trying to help. I really appreciate your time and effort.,

I tried the W7 suggestion. Same result. First, I did as suggested and went into Services and followed the instructions on changing the service by opening and making the settings exactly as the author suggested. I then unplugged the dongle, the BT icon went away. I reattached the dongle and the icon came on. I then opened the icon by right clicking on and clicking find new device. It took me to the new W* Personal Settings where it showed the Generic Bluetooth radio on. I the clicked Add device while holding down the proper button on the mouse. It identified the device then started the connection routine. The routine for connecting does not finish. So, the mouse shows on the device list but continues to say Offline.

I have tried every combination of things recommended. I will check tomorrow and see if I can hook up the mouse and Bluetooth radio to my old XP system. I hope there's a BT driver for XP. If it doesn't work, I will see if I can find another W7 macine to check the mouse out. After tha, I will be at my wit's end.

Have you set Windows Update to find updates for all components using Microsoft Updates? I think Windows Update has to find the Intellipoint software for it and it wont work until that's installed. By the way I looked at Microsoft Hardware pages and couldn't find the software there at all, weird.

I seem to have the latest version of Intellipoint. I just downloaded a version of it and, when I went to install it, it said I had a later version.

However, when I opened Task Manager and looked at Services, I could not find anything that looked like Intellipoint. On the other hand, when I looked at the Details section of Task Manager, it showed iPoint.exe running. I would think that's just a shortened name for Intellipoint but, one never knows. As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, the mouse was working just fine on Windows 7.

    Thanks again,
    Rick
