You wont see it in services as it's software. You should see, however, Bluetooth Support Service there as Started. Yes ipoint.exe is Intellipoint. Have you opened Microsoft Mouse in your Start Menu and gone to the Wireless tab and tried connecting there?

The system starts with the Metro screen. I may have screwed up the installation or never completed it. The only active buttons on the Metro screen are Desktop, IE, Driver Manager, Device Center and Word (which I installed). The current Desktop is identical to my W7 one with the exception of there being no Start button.

The Desktop is where I normally go.

Does any of that make sense?

There should be a Microsoft Mouse app then...I hope? Not in my Windows 8 at the moment as busy with other stuff in Vista, sorry.

No app shown in Start screen, none found in full search of the PC.

While digging around I found the following:
    $WINDOWS.~B/ Sources/replacementmanifests/microsoft-windows-bth-user/ bthmigplugin.dll

I have no idea if that means anything.

As I've said, somehow the system is seeing both the BT radio and the mouse but, neither of them are shown as "ready". Normally - at least to me - that would indicate a driver problem. But, the drivers are all present just not working.

That sounds like a driver or something. Sorry I'm lost now and don't know what to suggest. Hopefully someone will come along with more knowledge.

Thanks Peter for trying. I hope someone will come up with something. I've been googling the subject every day. I saw something that looked promising but, it's specifically Asus related.

    Oh well....

PS: Is there any way to stop the virtual keyboard from coming up when I touch the screen? Don't bother to if you're busy.oo

Rick, just so you don't feel alone, my Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse (Wireless Entertainment 8000) refuse to work in Windows 8 after an intitial apparent willingness to cooperate. Then I found that I couldn't bypass the passkey requirement for the keyboard which ruins its use in a multi-boot scenario, and ever since neither mouse nor keyboard have worked no matter what I try. Fortunately I have a semi-convenient wired mouse and keyboard which I would normally only need in Safe Mode or in the BIOS.

I think I'm going to make a run to Radio shack to find a cheap wired one too.

I do appreciate you going out of your way to help. I haven't been there in years but, Toronto is one of my favorite cities.

Good luck in your future endeavors. And, if you're ever have occasion to visit the People's Republic of Portland (Oregon), let me know (rfyorkinpdx@gmail.com).

Thanks, I passed through Portland many moons ago on a Panam jet which was going San Francisco. - London (UK). where I lived at the time, no idea why that route and never got to see anything as it was night, so one day maybe. The closest I've ever got on vacation was, apart from SFO, Vancouver B.C. Toronto has grown so much. Right now we are only second to Dubai for the number of condo buildings going up which isn't necessarily a good thing I'm beginning to suspect.
