 I have followed all the advice given that I had found thru googling, most came from off the Win7 forum here, but was related to a win8 or 8.1 upgrade....

I just purchased new Insignia multi-card reader connected to machine, got the windows connected sound, but nothing in the windows exporer pane (what was My computer in XP and Win 7)...went ahead and connected my cf card... still nothing:cry:, should show Nikon D3 (all may cards are named for the camera they get shot in :D) ... ???

card is a transcend 16gb 1000x ... computer is win 8.1 pro 64bit, 16gb ram, processor: AMD a10-7850KAPU with Radeon R7 Graphics, Motherboard: Asus A88X-PRO

I have never had this kind of trouble and I am NOT liking the win 8.1 at all... ... ... to da** much invested to toss it out and do something different.

Try this . Connect the card reader and put a flash card in it .
On the desktop , right click the start button . Click Disk Management . The flash card should show up in the disk management list .
It will have no drive letter . In the lower pane of disk management , right click on the flash card in the panel next to the disk number. Click Change Drive Letter and Paths , assign a drive letter to the cf card . Click ok . The card should now show up in explorer .
You might have to do this for all your flash cards .
For some reason on drives that been formatted and written to by a device other than the computer with 8 or 8.1 windows will not auto assign a drive letter . I have NO idea why .
I have 8 8gb cf cards for my D2Xs I had to do this for all the cards . I assigned letters S - Z to them and they all show up without this oddness .
I truly hope that this works for you , if it does not then I have no idea what the problem is with your setup .

Glad ya got sorted , thanks for the grin .
Picture this . Drive 1020 miles . Hike / slog 2 miles into the swamp , in the moonlight see the trees full of spoonbills , woodstorks etc . Set up camera etc . Turn on camera , NADA . Check said camera .... no battery . Look through 60 lbs of gear .... no batteries .
Hike the 2 miles back to the truck . Search the truck .... no batteries . Remember charging the batteries and leaving them on my desk 1020 miles away . Go back out get camera etc . Drive home . Get drunk . Have a three day hangover.............
That was stooopid .
